I do worry sometimes about the practicality of #LearningDanish from the United States of America. The number of native Danish speakers is similar to the population of, say, Minnesota or Colorado. I also recognize that most Danish people have some level of familiarity with English, and that most movies, television shows, and video games published in English won't be dubbed, which will make it considerably more difficult to practice from afar.

I am a bit disappointed in myself, but I'm already doubting whether learning Danish would be useful after just one week. I think my immigration prospects are slim and I would probably manage with no language ability if I were a tourist.

@R While I do admire your commitment, you're right. Everyone here gladly speaks English and only children's TV is dubbed. You will have close to zero challenges if you're just visiting as a tourist. On the other hand, if you plan to live here, learning the language will just make the experience so much more fulfilling. And again, I tip my hat to you, Sir - I've known many a foreigner living and working here for many years, with absolutely no interest in learning the language. Regarding immigration, there are programs for fast tracking work permits for certain employers. Poke me if that's something you're considering.

@saustrup I would like to live in Denmark—that is why I started learning Danish—but I think other languages will afford further opportunities. I have been learning French for a few years now because I think it'll open doors in both North America (Canada) and Europe (France, Belgium, or Switzerland). In some cases, I think these are more practical, too; Canada has its Express Entry system to become a permanent resident, for instance, whereas Denmark seems to require several years of continuous work prior to an application for residence.

If you have any information about the fast-track work permits, I would definitely be interested. I'm an engineer (I just got my master's degree and I hope to finish my PhD in about two years), so I think I may be eligible for a couple of the work permit categories by the time I'm looking to move.

@R Come and visit. Talk a bit Danish. Best way to decide if you like it here. Regarding the fast track, take a look at https://www.nyidanmark.dk/en-GB/Applying/Work/Fast%20track
