How the far right tore apart one of the best tools to fight voter fraud

Long but invaluable read; superb investigative reporting by Miles Parks, https://www.npr.org/people/395772167/miles-parks

Shows how easily a few individuals / one website derailed tried-and-true voter verification tool - the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC).

If you care about democracy, it's required reading. The approaches - like most far-right tactics - are pages from the same play book - misinformation, disinformation, divide and conquer, noise (culture wars), ... - via well-funded, well-trained and practiced political operatives and tactics deploying tactics tailored to the issue du jour.

Corruption of the electoral process in the U.S. ( increasing in Canada) partly involves voter suppression, election denial (conspiracies), & electoral fraud.

Voter suppression tactics include gerrymandering & voter restrictions (eligibility ...), & erosion of truest of anti-fraud mechanisms such as the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC).

Election denial includes disinformation on the integrity of paper ballots (counts; ballot box security; ...). voting machine conspiracies, ...

Tactics include disinformation on the electoral process, and election of sympathetic (corrupt) Secretaries of State, who certify state elections (state and federal level)l

Other tactics include overwhelming state officials with demands for attention (questioning in minute detail standards and procedures), election monitoring (scrutineering, and other intimidation tactics, including the Proud Boys), ...

Top-down (federal --> state) approaches include:

* Article V convention (Convention to propose amendments to the United States Constitution), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convention_to_propose_amendments_to_the_United_States_Constitution

... an aim of the conservative political nonprofit Citizens for Self-Governance, and their Convention of States initiative, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens_for_Self-Governance#Convention_of_States

Convention to propose amendments to the United States Constitution - Wikipedia

* Independent states legislature theory - a quasi-legal confabulation that posits that the U.S. Constitution delegates authority to regulate federal elections within a state to state lawmakers without any checks and balances from state courts, governors, or other bodies with legislative power. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_state_legislature_theory

Bottom-up approaches are largely grass-roots; populist-led movements by groups such as Moms for Liberty, that (.e.g.) are seizing control of boards of education (school boards).

This approach is exemplified by Mike Flynn's efforts in Sarasota County, Florida (with the assistance of the Proud Boys). Mike Flynn's "America Project" (no Wikipedia article; see Persagen.com) is a larger piece of this strategy- gathering intelligence on voting machine (for example) for voting machine conspiracy theories / challenges.

Grassroots-engaging operatives include Mike Flynn (mentioned) & Cleta Mitchell (who tried to assist Trump in overturning the 2020 election); federal level operatives include Leonard Leo, ...

Key anti-democracy organizations include Mitchell's "Election Integrity Network", the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC; model bills promulgator), the Conservative Partnership Institute (CPI), and others

Cleta Mitchell is the Senior Legal Fellow at CPI and chairs CPI's Election Integrity Network.

@persagen Welcome to the fediverse! You popped on my radar about a week ago and are doing outstanding work. Thanks for bringing the receipts and dropping the knowledge!

@persagen Now to spread the word!
When you started following me, you seemed almost too organized and right on so I was a little leery but now I'm comfortable saying you are on the level and boosting you like crazy.
If you don't already follow @Npars01 I'd recommend her as you cover a lot of the same ground and she also brings the links.
Keep up the good work and have a lovely evening :)
