We have a houseguest, and she turns out to be Right Wing. She's my wife's friend, but I could not stay silent. She had started in with J about the "Border Crisis" and J shut that right down, to her credit, but I felt it wasn't enough.

I told our guest about a fascinating book I was reading, that it was good, but traumatic. It was about the Mezote Massacre in El Salvador, and how soldiers trained by the C.I.A. to prevent leftist incursion, were told to frighten the villagers, and instead, tortured and murdered 800 to 1000 people.

Then I left the room.

She hasn't said anything along those lines since.

I think we have to speak up, even when it's uncomfortable or might be seen as "impolite."

@kimlockhartga "Nice people made the best Nazis. My mom grew up next to them. They got along, refused to make waves, looked the other way when things got ugly, and focused on happier things than 'politics'. They were lovely people who turned their heads as their neighbors were dragged away. You know who weren't nice people? Resisters." β€” Naomi Shulman

Always be impolite in these situations. Always.

This is why I cherish my great-uncle's parting advice. They are the words not just of a man, but of an entire generation. Politics has plenty of room for socialists, liberals, moderates, conservatives, libertarians and all other non-hateful ideologies. But when it comes to the hate-based ideologies of the far right, the only appropriate attitude is absolute opposition. Why? To quote Uncle Merrill, "Nazis are bastards." While I can not advocate killing Nazis, no society that can call itself civilized will long endure unless we forcefully oppose their ideas.

My World War II veteran great-uncle helped free a concentration camp. His last words to me were a warning

We are losing our direct connection to the Greatest Generation β€” and it matters more than ever
