My husband had to wait for 6 years to capture this view of #TheNeedles.

Taken as the #moon set at 4.30 am last summer. This shot is only possible a couple of times each year. He almost had it in 2016 but it was slightly too breezy and the telephoto lens couldn't keep in focus.

It causes controversy as some think it's fake, I promise you that it is not. It involved much research, persistence and luck with the weather! It's the cover shot on our 2024 calendar #IsleofWight #photography

@sharongascoigne Nice!!! Love it! Congrats to hubby!
@astronomywriter Thank you. I can't tell you how elated he was to finally cross it off his photography wish list! He still thinks he can improve on it so I think the mission continues!

@sharongascoigne LOL I wish him well, but remind him that art is never finished, only abandoned.

All art is flawed because the artist will never achieve perfection. (No harm in trying though)

@astronomywriter That's precisely what motivates him to get out with the camera. In fact he's always got it with him, wherever we go ๐Ÿ˜…
@sharongascoigne Amazing shot and I can imagine the planning that went onto it.
@sharongascoigne This is a snap I took a couple of years ago from the other side of the needles.

@ExBrexinSpain @sharongascoigne

Totally different perspective to the one more commonly seen from high upon the land.

The cliffs look just like an iceberg.

@Jon6705 @ExBrexinSpain If you know the tides and are much fitter than I you can walk around them on a few occasions each year.
@sharongascoigne @Silversnapples thatโ€™s a very impressive picture

@sharongascoigne

Absolutely great shot!

I guess it requires a lot of astronomical calculations and trigonometry to be sure to be in the right place at the right moment.

@GustavinoBevilacqua It used to when Steve first started doing this type of shot. It's much easier now with the help of the Photographer's Ephemeris app.

The tricky bit is all the running around to get into the absolute precise location at just the right moment.

@sharongascoigne

It's the reverse of dating the image of the moonrise over Hernandez made by Ansel Adams ๐Ÿ™‚

Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico - Wikipedia

@GustavinoBevilacqua I'll show this link to Steve {my husband) he isn't on Mastodon. Ansel Adams is his favourite photographer, he studied his work during his photography A level in school back in the late 80s.
@GustavinoBevilacqua @sharongascoigne That's fantastic! I love that the original retrocalculated time and place were one day and 15 m wrong because the CGA monitor didn't have square pixels and someone misread a graph that didn't compensate for it.
@sharongascoigne wow, that is cool!!!๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

@sharongascoigne

That is a truly amazing shot and fortunate that conditions were right and everything aligned to be able to capture that moment.

However, it was humorous at first because as I quickly scrolled through the feed my mind first registered it as a picture of Crow from MST3K.

@sharongascoigne people who claim it's fake got a bit to learn about photography, exposure, and basic perspective. nonetheless, this is just an awesome shot and i'm glad for him to be able to seize the opportunity

@korin I think that's the essence of it. There's a lot to learn to be able to achieve a shot like this as well a a huge amount of luck. It's easy to dismiss something that you may think is impossible to capture. There are way more failed attempts than successes, but then that's why it's challenging and fun to do!

Thank you :)

@sharongascoigne Compliments on the beautiful #alttext , on that image.
@obviousdwest Thank you, that's much appreciated.

@sharongascoigne

Does it ever set in the โ€˜Vโ€™ of the rock? I do love photos of these kinds of line-ups.

@NoctisEqui This was taken a few minutes earlier. I think it was possible to capture it there on this occasion but it was a choice of one or the other. My husband had to run up and down the beach to get into position. He took another slightly earlier, when it was darker which gave the moon reflection on the sea but it was much higher in the sky. It's one on the list for this summer ๐Ÿคž
@sharongascoigne Very nice. Beautiful day for it too.
@sharongascoigne @topposts Please tell your husband that this compete stranger on the internet thinks his shot is beautiful and magical and Iโ€™m so happy he put in the effort to create it. โค๏ธ
@KingShawn @topposts Thank you, I've just shown him your comment ๐Ÿ™‚
@sharongascoigne Wasnt that featured on BBC news recently ?
@Whiskeyomega Ooh I don't know about that?
@sharongascoigne Yea i remember seeing on the news last year. Im sure.
@sharongascoigne How'd he ever get that up there? ๐Ÿ˜€ Seriously, congrats.
@sharongascoigne Would you be willing to share some of the technical details of this amazing shot? Was there some dawn light at 4:30 am? Would the human eye have seen this very differently - e.g. the sky would have been nearly black, and a long exposure was used? I'm guessing that explains how there's a small amount of cloud in front of the moon, but not visible against the "blue" sky.
@gfwellman There was quite a lot of light as it was just before sunrise. I wasn't there on this occasion but I know that you get the "Blue Hour" just before sunrise and just after sunset. That is key for this type of shot. Here's another taken half an hour or so before during the same shoot.
@sharongascoigne amazing! What lens did he use and how far was he?
@jromz03 100-400 lens, standing about a mile away ๐Ÿ™‚
@sharongascoigne Thatโ€™s a lovely shot! Was it taken from Milford?
@DJDarren Thank you. No it was taken down on Alum Bay

@sharongascoigne Ah! That makes sense.

Hearing the name of Alum Bay brings back traumatic memories of my dad buying me a glass rabbit full of sand, that I was *immensely* proud of for two whole minutes, before dropping it in the car park. Itโ€™s been 35 years, but Iโ€™m still gutted.

@DJDarren Ooh no! I'm pretty sure that they still sell them in the gift shop so you may be able to get a replacement all these years on ๐Ÿ˜‰
@sharongascoigne Wow that is neat ๐Ÿ˜Š
@sharongascoigne where might one get a copy of that calendar?
2024 Isle of Wight calendar

@sharongascoigne Thanks Sharon. Ordering for mum's Xmas present. We lived in Totland for over 30 years
