OpenAI announces a competition for ten $100k grants to come up with democratic principles for the governance of AI. On the face of it, this is appealing. Love democracy. But just like tech companies begging for regulation, this can also be seen as an abrogation of their own responsibility to make their own ethical decisions about how they govern themselves first.

Democratic inputs to AI

Our nonprofit organization, OpenAI, Inc., is launching a program to award ten $100,000 grants to fund experiments in setting up a democratic process for deciding what rules AI systems should follow, within the bounds defined by the law.

@jeffjarvis
That's going to have to include some discussion of capitalism and the balance between public good and profit.
@jeffjarvis
Historically, there hasn't been much luck with industries governing themselves, and if they are right about the risks that AI might pose, I'm glad to see them encourage regulation. Now, we'll see if SCOTUS will let them be regulated by an agency of experts rather than by direct legislation.
@jeffjarvis There you again, saying what i think before I’ve even thought of it.
@jeffjarvis
Off the cuff I'd guess they want to be seen as interested in artist's opinions and they have no idea how to sell a product that would respect artists, so they are asking the public for ideas to make people want the thing they have -- and they have no plans to stop stealing art, ever.
@jeffjarvis
They're only asking for ideas. They will toss most of them out because they will involve some kind of accountability that open AI already said they can't or won't provide
@jeffjarvis It’s also window dressing and virtue signaling. The only way that they survive is to serve the financial interests of their investors. Period.
@jeffjarvis What are the terms of service & ownership rights governing the applicant information and subsequent results of projects? I didn’t see any statement at the outset of the application, and the applicable TOS involves both OpenAI and SurveyMonkey at a minimum. Ideally these terms would be transparent from the very beginning.
@jeffjarvis the real funds are coming from Microsoft . Openai makes zero money
