That’s it! I’m taking a stand. Whatever kind of #nonFiction you are writing, please include a detailed index. Eschewing an index reduces the utility of your book! Whether a tech book, cookbook, history or whatever, all readers benefit from access to an #index! #writers #publishing #authors #readers A table of contents is necessary but not sufficient. Bibliography too, please. #Backmatter matters.
@DianaOfPortland Serious question: Is this also relevant for ebook-only books? Or am I just trying to justify my lazyness
@CorinnaBaldauf It’s only a thing if you’d want me to resonate with some part of your content and want me to find it again when I want to promote it later on social media or in a conversation. 😉
@DianaOfPortland At least you got me to look into how to do this in markdown and ... not straightforward 😔
@CorinnaBaldauf @DianaOfPortland
How is this done 😳? If vague memories how it is done in LaTeX but never saw it in markdown (i haven't looked for it so)

People will say that using search is the same as an index. It's not. In looking at the index you can see if the material you are looking for is in the book. Also, an index gathers concepts together that may be using different terminology in the book. Food, diet, nutrition could all be captured together under a main heading or have cross references to alert the user to other information.

@DianaOfPortland Yes. I could just barely tolerate omitted indices in the days when it took hard work to compile an index. It's been at least thirty years, though.
