‘The whole thing stinks’: UK water firms to pay £15bn to shareholders as customers foot sewage bill - https://theguardian.com/money/2023/may/20/the-whole-thing-stinks-uk-water-firms-to-pay-15bn-to-shareholders-as-customers-foot-sewage-bill it's simple: no dividends until the infrastructure is upgraded, and no price rises. if investors don't like it, they can move elsewhere.

investors do not have an inviolable right to dividends; the public does have a right to rivers and seas without sewage - if companies can't do this, nationalise them

With cost of cleanup to be passed on to bill payers, analysis shows they will also pay £624 more by 2030 to fund investor payouts

@glynmoody the water rights were sold on the principle that companies could manage the infrastructure -better- than government.

Pretty clear by now that they can't, I think we're past the first side of your statement. Nationalise the fuckers yesterday.

@glynmoody and the worst part is that it's not even just poor management - it's that the very nature of corporate ownership incentivises the detrimental behaviour. Wanting good water management is fundamentally anti-capitalist.
@glynmoody It's hard to think of a single reason not to make you the PM with immediate effect. It *is* that simple.

@glynmoody The shareholders' dividends were ringfenced against pirate zombie infestation.
