I had hoped that AirPods Pro noise cancellation would help me with my hyperacusis, but it turns out that "eardrum suck" (an unpleasant feeling of pressure in the ears) is a thing, and apparently I experience it.

Will it get better, or am I wasting my time? I only notice it when active noise cancellation is on; otherwise these little things are brilliant.

@agkozak to tell the truth, I prefer the protection that a good pair of cans offer. I’ve been using #Sony’s #WH1000XM4, & until recently I’ve been very happy with them. I think the problem is with the app, but the truth is that these things have been through a lot so I don’t know if I have reason to complain

I’m seeing #BadReviews for the current version of their #app, so I’m hesitant to upgrade.

If it doesn’t improve by the end of the #summer, I might have to look elsewhere

@zyz Do you think there’s a shop that would let me test them out? From reading about “eardrum suck,” I’m beginning to get the feeling that any really good noise cancellation is going to cause me to feel uncomfortable pressure, but I’d love to be wrong. Interestingly, if I play loud enough music, I don’t feel the pressure very much.

@agkozak honestly, I don’t know how things will work, since we are each going to have different sensitivities. I know that for me, there is a range of sound that noise canceling technology falls short on. Luckily though, it’s not a common range of sound around here.

That said, I know that the WH-1000XM5 (new model) has some upgrades that I haven’t experienced.

Places like Walmart and Best Buy are the only places I can think of that might let you try them out. Someplace local?
