I’m trying to be social here on mastodon but can’t figure out what hashtags people in my field are using??? Looking for Romantic Lit and 18th century lit peeps. Also Gothicists, ecocritics and ecofeminists. #academia #academicchatter #academicmastodon
@Alex_Wagstaffe definitely a bit tricky to find other folks when you first get started here — but hashtags (and boosts!) are a great strategy! :)

@Alex_Wagstaffe I'm on mobile so I'll have to flip back and forth for multiple replies.

#romanticlit and possibly #RomanticLiterature

@Alex_Wagstaffe my best tip is this:

Mastodon allows you to follow hashtags. Do a few educated guesses as to which hashtags are relevant (like #literature )

That should have some messages pop up in your timeline that will often contain several hashtags. Add the interesting ones to your follow list.

Rinse and repeat a few times and you should have a better picture of which tags are used a lot.

I found several really useful hashtags this way.

@Alex_Wagstaffe #Bookstodon is always a good tag to start with. Maybe also #Histodons. Good luck!

@Alex_Wagstaffe Have a look at this feed:

Follow nearly everyone, watch what they say and boost, follow people they boost, start culling.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

keep trying, Always post with hastags for a while. When typing hashtags it hints on their use frequency.

Also if you click a hashtage it will open column, AT THE TOP of that column is a follow icon. Then will follow that hashtag in your home timeline.

2nd, if you find good peeps, follow the follows they have.

You and I are the algorithm, no posts hidden, no posts sent to you.
