1. Turkey is in the middle of an extremely close and consequential election. There will be a second round of voting in two weeks.

Make no mistake: @[email protected] is helping the authoritarian government cling to power by censoring tweets from its political opponents

🧵

@[email protected] 2. Twitter announced the decision to censor content in Turkey in a vaguely-worded tweet.

Musk later pledged to "post what the government in Turkey sent us."

Nearly two days later NOTHING HAS BEEN RELEASED

@[email protected] 3. Musk claims this is how things always are done. Turkey demands censorship and social media companies comply.

This is a lie.

Under previous management, Twitter fought Erdoğan's attempts to censor critics

Musk bows to Turkey's autocratic government, censors Twitter before critical election

Elon Musk, a self-described "free speech absolutist," agreed to censor Twitter in Turkey on Saturday, the day before a critical election, at the request of the nation's autocratic government. The decision is a sharp break from how Twitter responded to the censorship requests of the current regime, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, before Musk bought the company. Musk has lucrative business dealings with the incumbent Turkish government through his company SpaceX.

@[email protected] 4. In 2014, Erdoğan shut down access to Twitter in Turkey "after a series of leaks... helped fuel a corruption scandal ensnaring his government." Turkey also obtained an order "to take down an account with Tweets that accused a former government minister of corruption."

@[email protected] 5. Twitter publicly blasted the government's actions and quickly filed petitions in Turkish court to reverse the takedown order and the ban. The takedown order was reversed two days later.

A couple of weeks later, following other losses in court, Erdoğan rescinded the ban.

@[email protected] 6. In contrast, Musk has had absolutely nothing critical to say about the Turkish government's censorship requests

Musk has simply complied and defended the decision to comply

Why is Musk, a self-described "free speech absolutist" taking this approach?

One of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets, which was used to launch the satellite, costs $62 million.

@juddlegum Love your reporting, Judd. But we've already liberated ourselves! Given that you clearly don't even monitor replies to this account and just have it automatically copying tweets from Twitter, I think it's YOU that probably needs liberation.

Once more shouting into the void. 🙄

@hyperzonk @juddlegum Shout into the void long enough and the void shouts back into you. And remember quiet hours are from 10pm to 8am.

@juddlegum

Musk likes playing with fire, but funny thing about fire is it will burn you every single time. I personally can’t wait for the conflagration.

Until then, Dante is preparing Musk’s room.

@juddlegum Very convenient timing!
@juddlegum Because he's a liar and not interested in any "free speech" at all, except when it is useful noise to pound down actual dissent.
Because what he HAS successfully monetized is Twitter as a way to limit or repress speech(that is, if one, like many are trained now to do, treats it as the only possible outlet) for dictators, some of which were his backers in this.
As though they'd spend all that money to buy #ElonMusk a mere toy
@juddlegum For one, he doesn't actually care about free speech. He just invokes 'free speech' as a means of privileging the kind of speech he likes. You know at least as well as anyone else that he's been petty and censorious with speech he doesn't like

@juddlegum

Not unexpected, right? He was caught censoring for Modi a little while back, no?

@juddlegum Elon is a liar. A new type of liar called a facsimiliac.
@juddlegum What did you expect? Felon Muskolini is an asshole.

@juddlegum I only object to the first point: "extremely close" isn't in the cards anymore.

Erdogan will win this.

Kılıçdaroğlu can't, he should've snatched the lead in the first round to win but that didn't happen. He underperformed compared to polls by so wide margin. Turkish analysts don't see him anymore winning.

@juddlegum Oh heavens we’ll eventually be rid of Murdoch’s evil political meddling only to be replaced by Musk…who seems even worse.
Sheesh!
@juddlegum
May the conservative asshats (conservatism is antidemocratic and violates human rights in the name of "tradition") be toppled, and a new, liberal order rise to the helm to adequately serve the people.
@juddlegum I like seeing #democratic processes weeding out bad governance around the world.
I really dislike seeing #bigdata putting their grubby fingers into the pie
@juddlegum is there an explanation about why this is ok?
@juddlegum kind of feel like if democracy is reliant on a bunch of morons who decide how to vote because of tweets (missing or exisitng) well, maybe it is too weak to survive. #Dumbocracy
@juddlegum Turkey is a test run to mess with the 2024 elections here. People need to wake up and move to a safer platform so they can organize and not be disrupted just before the election. I’ve literally been telling people this since the day I left #Twitter.
@adamjcook @juddlegum is anyone suprised that the screamer of "free speech!!" is only in favour of it when its nasty, nazi, anti trans, anti gay, right wing free speech?

@juddlegum

How is this platform for censorship?
I only just joined so it's a genuine question/concern.
