In the 1950’s and 60’s, clown shows as entertainment were huge hits for kids. Bozo the Clown, Howdy Doody, and circus and rodeo clowns, all were huge entertainers for children.
I would submit that today’s drag shows are merely a continuation of that tradition of dress-up / makeup entertainment for kids, of course, sans the slapstick vaudeville schtick.
