The Allen terrorist who killed 8 innocent people, including a child:
•Hated women
•Hated Black people
•Praised Hitler
•Praised neo-Nazis
•Wore Nazi regalia
•Built social media profiles promoting genocide

Meanwhile NY Times: "His motive remains unclear."

🤦🏽‍♂️

@QasimRashid

They're too busy looking for a cute childhood photo of him. It's the first thing they do when a right wing terrorist kills people.

@QasimRashid Please add a CW. Some people here are NOT in the right emotional state to see this. Thank you.
@yuki2501 It’s just a clipping of a newspaper article, not footage of a shooting.

@blinky81 Text can be triggering, too. It's not up to the poster to decide if people might be triggered or not, but to ensure the fewest people will. That's why we have content warnings.

Is it really that hard to do an extra few clicks and a single line of typing to save others from a really disturbing moment?

@yuki2501 won’t they still see the text though? Do people just read CW and then close their eyes and keep scrolling? I feel like for text like this there’s no point at all, because you take in the info so quickly. Videos are completely different because you have to actually click and watch the whole thing.

Also, I think it is up to the poster to post whatever they want to post as long as it is within the guidelines of the poster’s instance.

@blinky81 CWs automatically collapse the text, so no, you don't take the info. (this may vary fepending on the server). Also, images get blurred. Remember that posts get federated to other servers, if you don't want other servers to get this, at least make sure to post to followers-only instead of public.
@yuki2501 Oh okay, wasn’t aware of that feature. And yeah, fair enough point.
@blinky81 Glad to have helped. Good day. 🙂
@blinky81 @yuki2501 I think you are actually being far too generous. This sort of behaviour should not be encouraged. After all, it's not like you're forcing anyone to follow you at gunpoint.
@alapite I’m just not trying to piss anyone off here, haha.
@yuki2501 And no, it’s not hard to type “CW”, I was just saying there’s really no point of doing that for a small sample of a widely read newspaper.
@yuki2501 I’m not trying to be rude or annoying or anything. Just trying to understand how a CW would help when this story is literally all over the internet and the news. All this post has in it is a literal clipping of said news.

@blinky81

Demonstration of CW in action. Read with Tusky for mobile.

@blinky81 Also, be aware that some people do, in fact, turn off the news because they can't take it anymore.

It's not about censorship; it's about consent, and the right not to have traumatic events getting shoved down your throat on social media.

@yuki2501 I understand people can turn the news off but to be honest unless you’re living under a rock there’s little chance you won’t hear about a mass shooting.
@yuki2501 @blinky81 How about simply unfollowing users whose content you don't like? It's utterly unreasonable to expect everyone else to know what might or might not trigger someone or other, and this obsession with content warnings is the kind of scolding that drives away so many people who might otherwise enrich Mastodon.
@alapite Unfortunately for the other user, I agree with you on this Alapite. You put it a lot more eloquent than I did but your point is basically what I was trying to get across. I think a platform such as Mastodon should most likely not be policed with content warnings.
@alapite Also I think I just got blocked by them… Was trying to be as respectful as I could be but oh well.
@QasimRashid I love how they say it "remains" unclear, which specifically means that even after learning all of these facts about him, nothing is clear to the New York Times.
@QasimRashid And his profile was on a Russian site…
@QasimRashid What's his skin complexion? This is important to these news sources, including you.
@QasimRashid NYT editing staff proving yet again what piles of dogshit they can be.

@QasimRashid

Ever wonder what kind of influence peddling and funded malign influence campaigns go to create these misleading headlines?

Republican billionaires must be spending a lot to whitewash their stochastic terrorism.

@QasimRashid "yes, but why THAT DAY?".... sigh.
@QasimRashid Normalize Hate Speech by ignoring the reality that it can/is motive for horrific acts taken by the speaker.

@QasimRashid It is a protected 1st amendment right to post regrettable, embarrassing, infuriating, annoying and inflammatory posts online. Using that 1st amendment right does not mean the poster is announcing any intention of acting on them. I could write that I detest the British Conservative party and all they stand for. That does not mean that I am liable to inflict more harm on them than (when I'm in Britain) simply voting for any party other than them.

The NYT was absolutely correct in stating there is no motive as yet. There's a lot of missing information. It's a huge leap from posting stuff online to picking up a club and battering somebody over the head with it. There are several in-between steps.

@QasimRashid MSM downplays for billionaires. The true culprits. Look at Harlan Crowe. Signed book by Hitler! Nuff said.
@QasimRashid Elon of course replying favorably to Putin supporting subhuman garbage Ian Miles Cheong who is claiming the shooters white supremacist views are a psy op
@QasimRashid he Hispanic says the right he can’t be a Nazi. Yeah well can you say Clarence three times in the mirror.
@QasimRashid
JESUS what motive does the New York Times have for blowing smoke up my ass

@QasimRashid I don't doubt all of this is possible in the hateful world we live in:

•Hated women
•Hated Black people
•Praised Hitler
•Praised neo-Nazis
•Wore Nazi regalia
•Built social media profiles promoting genocide

However, where is your evidence? Ironic to criticize the NYT and provide no evidence. You should provide links.

@QasimRashid
It is clear, however, that the terrorist was a proud member of the #RepublicanParty and served in their SA Brownshirt terror cells.
@QasimRashid racism is exceptionally hard for them to admit is a motive
@QasimRashid Pathetic. This #McSweeneys satirical article, like all the best satire, grasps the truth that #NYT refuses to see. #ItsTheGuns

They’re a fascist terror organization. They exist to consolidate power for their corporate overlords and themselves.

@QasimRashid most people can't seem to grasp the concept of fascism as an ideology as bad if not worse than ISIS
@QasimRashid
Meh… I think that’s what a newspaper is expected to do. The last line is just for plausible deniability. They can’t put sarcastic tone and airquotes and winking emoji there, but we’re expected to assume them. All of the stuff they say before that is the newsworthy things and the last part is from the legal department to cover their asses.

@QasimRashid

Katherine Belew, author of "Bring the War Home" was on The Rachel Maddow Show this evening.

These extremists are antisemitic, racist, xenophobic, & misogynistic and their rage & violence is being ramped up by the wealthy donors funding the GOP.

These domestic terrorists & the GOP have common cause; they believe murderous despots like Hitler, Orban, Pinochet, & Putin are right.

These mass shooters & the GOP are part of a broadly funded fascist movement.

Takes a special kind of journalism to state that…

They are confused, because the know plenty of people who think the same things. Hell, they probably agree with at least one or two of these points.
@QasimRashid freindly reminder that news is treated by the news as entertainment, not as a method of giving good information.
