@aka_quant_noir @TonyStark People often want to add this disclaimer, but once you get into the practice of moderating we don't really. Most people's sense of trollery is actually fine, they just second guess it for ages and put their whole group through many rounds of bad faith conversation until they reach the breaking point and finally clear away the person they knew was bad long before.

@[email protected] @mystixa Disagreements are up to individuals. Users are well within their rights to block anyone they want on social media. It’s an offered and regular feature anywhere and everywhere.

And yes, bad faith arguments are worth nobody’s time.

@TonyStark Sometimes, I'm uncertain at first. So, I will reply & wait to hear back - generally I didn't misinterpret what I read (blocked). However, a few times I have- and then, we have trolls who don't try to hide who they really are, again- blocked!

Never worth your mental energy to interact with trolls, because they don't have arguments to present, they just want to argue... period.

@TonyStark Today started out blocking a few trolls, and ended up importing block lists from @oliphant en masse. With my tiny solo instance, that took a good while.

OTOH, I included "Die, Nazi scum." multiple times through the reporting and blocking process up the point that Oliphant pinged me. So there is that.

@notroot @oliphant Yeah, I can share anything anyone wants on that. Antisemitism, homophobia- you name it, I got it.

@TonyStark @oliphant I had it all today... N-words, K-words, trans- and homophobic memes and insults. Dozens of accounts all of a sudden.

It's my fault for not securing my instance, but then I'm the only user so the only person who had to suffer.

There really is something to be said for solo instances.

@TonyStark Absolutely. Its something Ive had reinforced so many times over while being a moderator for years on Twitch and Discord. It doesn't take much to discern the ignorant/unaware/mistaken from the true trolls. Once that determination is made it is actively harmful to the entire group to keep them around, because their entire purpose is to disrupt and cause chaos. Debating with them is just giving them more opportunity.

Honestly, I find trolls just awful.
I have a certain hope and that's why I'm on social media.
Trolls are just the opposite of that.
I have not faced any on mastodon so far.
With what trolls do they validate my struggle but I can't and don't want to deal with them. I need my power for those who should be given hope and strength.

So please who discovers trolls, send me a list, I look then briefly in the profile and decide.
I do not want to be trolled again, like on Twitter, because I try to stand up for a better and more social world.
It was mean and awful.

This is how it should be.
Mastodon should stand for the opposite of what the others are.
Keeping it that way is a struggle for all of us.
It would be great if we keep it the way it is and even better.
