10-15 years ago, dumb folks like myself were flocking to the convenience of SSO and some of us (also me 🤦‍♀️) gave hundreds of third-party apps full access to our birdsite and Zuccbook social graphs as we tried all the new blingy shit we could.

Fuck the anarchic social web, centralisation is awesome seemed to be zeitgeist. So when I turned up with the Great Migration I was hoping to be part of the anarchic web again, but fuck me dead, I forgot all the birdsite libs and tech bros that came over with me are that mainstream mix progressive statists and soft anarcho-capitalists.

I can really understand why many of the good folk who were here prior feel like they've been rapidly culturally colonised. Birdsite brain is everywhere, even in the reactions against some birdsite features.

And now the great centralisation push is here. This time it feels a bit harder to combat because a big part of it is enmeshed with the push for the missing safety & anti-harassment protections
that we need

Can we have
#fediverse platforms that finally get the necessary tools built before the bling, but sans the centralising instances & infrastructure, the glorification of the BDFL, and the "United Nations of the Fediverse" lowest-denominator nonsense that's pushed by the guys who hate having their shitty takes blocked?

I really hope so.

@jo The Great Push for Centralization, I believe, is from people who are used to a online existence free of moderation. It's a lot like, or in some cases the same as, explaining the importance of regulations to a thirsty, free-market capitalist.
@ayilathebailey Another cohort is black users. Plenty of folks came and left because of the awful shit they encountered when they turned up on a new instance, as well as many being told "that's how it is" when they pointed out flaws in moderation and anti-harassment tools. @mekkaokereke has documented much of that history. @Are0h has too, and he's working on a curated fediverse block list for instances that will work well with Mastodon & Calc/Misskey backends.
@jo @mekkaokereke @Are0h I've read both their posts regarding this very thing, especially Bl**Sk*'s sudden about-face saying, "it was all proof-of-concept" like a poorly-written plot line from Dallas.

I was on a previous instance that eventually got me to search for other better, more closely-moderated instances. I got lucky finding *this* one, but I shudder at the constant Whack-a-mole the #blahaj mods have to do every effing day.
@ayilathebailey I think I 'splained you. I'm sorry.
@jo you're fine. That info needed to be a part of this thread anyway 👍
