Jamaica plans on holding a nationwide referendum on cutting ties with the monarchy. Lawmakers are also calling for an apology and reparations over the painful legacy of slavery on the island under centuries of British rule.

@AlexKarabanow -- agreed in principle, but exceedingly difficult for us to do here in practice.

It'll most likely require a constitutional change/re-opening...and the last two times we tried that for other things were acrimonious failures.

Plus there's the whole issue of First Nations reconciliation -- their treaties were negotiated and signed with the Crown specifically...legally transferring that authority to a new republican government will be problematic, to say the least.

@BlakeHamiltonCA Understood, but the status quo is unacceptable. Maintaining the monarchy has significant costs, and there have been creative solutions suggested that may not require a constitutional amendment.

We have to move forward and put our racist colonial past behind us

@AlexKarabanow - agreed completely, but do those creative solutions also address and sweep the political minefield of First Nations treaty rights I also mentioned?
@BlakeHamiltonCA It certainly is a political minefield. May be time to consider a broader approach, including some form of reparations
