That is one of the best formats I've heard of. We don't have that format. Students either work in a lab for money or come in with no experience wanting to work on a thesis project.

I really struggle with the latter It is just too hard to take them from 0->functional on the topic and the techniques in a semester.

I like to bring students in their first or second year and pay them to do lab support and then ease them into research over several semesters.

The pay comes in part from my lab budget and in part from the federal work-study program, which is a type of financial aid here in the US. This is a way for me to reach students that might not otherwise have a chance to do research.

If you are a faculty member in the US and are not hiring through the work-study program, I highly encourage it.
