Please boost to reach more people!

ableism.rip

I've updated the list with some other instances that were shared. Thank you all for the help and I hope this list helps these communities and our community grow!

@passis

For consideration,

I have #YOPD, associated #cognitiveimpairment, and #mentalhealth issues. People are warm. Many others have #disability, #mentalhealthissues or #neurodivergent. Another instance spewed racist crap at me within the first week and our admin blocked the person, checked the instanced then added it to our blocklist.

I joined due to my interest in the #horror. It's a safe space which allows people to focus more on their passion for interests.

@grryboy @passis https://horrorhub.club is great! I wanted to create an account for a while, but was overwhelmed with the different choices. It wasn’t until @thudfactor told me about this instance that I created an account, but I’m certainly glad I did.

@passis
I don't know if this is the kind of instance you have in mind but I am also on mentalhealth.social and feel safe there. It's relatively small and well moderated.
@DorytheFish thank you! I'll add to the list soon!
@passis hey neat I’m on one of those *boost*
@passis good idea. Here I help a little
@passis It's too bad we can't read the local timeline of another instance without having an account on that instance.

@blindndangerous @passis I think that depends on the instance?

This looks a lot like a local feed, for example (you might need to click on 'posts'):
https://disabled.social/explore

disabled.social

A place for people who are chronically ill, mentally ill, disabled, and friends/families/allies to come together, meet, share knowledge and random banter, and just about anything else.

Mastodon hosted on disabled.social

@ferrous @blindndangerous @passis

Yeah, most servers do let you read their Local timeline if you go to their website and click "Local". You don't need to be signed in or be a member.

@blindndangerous @passis
Apparently you can* by just adding /public/local to the server name.

Example:
https://ableism.rip/public/local

*assuming the server allows it.

@passis just to clarify before I accidentally boost into the wrong place: does the flag indicate English language or a specific UK focus? Thanks.
@mattblaze language. I wanted to add other languages after. As soon as I'm able to edit the toot, I'll add new flags!

@passis peoplemaking.games is a safe space. I recommend it!
@eveghost wow! I'll check it out and add it to the list as soon as I'm able to edit the toot! Thank you!
@passis how did you add the β€œtranslate” option on your post? I saw someone asking about that earlier…
@serenebabe I have no idea! Didn't know that there's a translation to my toot...
@passis Please add:

@passis Hi!

Blindscribe has a list too. Maybe y'all can cross reference! https://writing.exchange/@blindscribe/109388124872332539

Robert Kingett 🍍 (@[email protected])

I've created a small, incomplete, list of instances with moderators of color. The list and suggestions became to much to keep up on my own, so here is a Google document, https://docs.google.com/document/d/12pTmSMpq8lMYyYlHT25DgTmdMmE6ysUyRHGiq-E4XdQ/edit?usp=sharingp Here's how to move accounts and take your followers with you https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/ #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #BlackFedi #FediTips #TwitterMigration #MastoAdmin

@TheBird I'll check it out! Thank you!

@passis My two cent of controversial unpopular opininon.
Isin't massive segregation? Shouldn't we be more inclusif?

For example, why join tech.lgbt instead of general technology instance? Why join blacktwitter instead of regular history instance? Probably if a kind of humor was called blacktwitter that could be a sane group by why separate an ethnic history from others?

@dragnucs the history behind segregation and exclusion is long and difficult. But the point to be taken is about the actors: who is doing it and why. For example, if Group A segregates Group B, then it's a problem. But if Group B is within the same space as Group A but there they don't have any representation, no voice or space and are even victims of violence from Group A, then if Group B decides do make a space of their own, then it's not segregation or exclusion, but self (or group) preservation.
We need to understand these spaces as power dynamics, not just as spaces of their own...

@passis There is so called "Mastodon Server Covenant". https://joinmastodon.org/covenant

Why don't we focus effort on enforcing this than proliferating more niche in the niche servers?

Mastodon Server Covenant for joinmastodon.org

@passis I like the idea of safer spaces, but I have concerns about living in a specialized silo. I could happily be on several of these servers, but have decided on a general instance for the time being. I'm pretty new to mastodon so maybe it doesn't limit visibility outside the instance as much as it seems like it might to me.
@sleepdepzombie good for you! It must be nice to feel and be safe in generalized spaces with many different people. Unfortunately, that's not the case for many of us and that's why we seek specialized places.

@passis I'm not entirely sure how safe I actually feel. There's definitely anxiety for me around how much I'll post on certain subjects on this open of a space. This despite having been pretty open and opinionated online since FIDOnet and Gopher were things. I'm absolutely sure I would be more comfortable being open in different, more isolated spaces.

That said, I have concerns around the impact of self-segregating and building echo chambers. With the federation system I feel like there might be a false sense of security in these spaces as well.

Also, I have a lot of interests that would cross out to other topics in more controlled and curated spaces. One instance I found, users were concerned about mod approval for subjects outside of the core subject of the instance.

My solution to all of this, for now, is to be in a general instance. I did, however, specifically pick a primarily English speaking instance based in the EU (as opposed to a US one) that has what appears to be strong moderation guidelines. We'll see how that plays out.

If it doesn't work, my inclination is too create a bunch of subject specific instance accounts and engage with separate groups that way. That feels likea lot of overhead and it doesn't seem like there are good tools to engage different communities that way, for now.

Again, I'm super happy these spaces exist for people. I just don't feel like they're right for me at this point.

@passis Thank you for continuing to update this ❀️
@passis @Hart365 hey mike, any additions to this list?

@jamesnovak @passis

I'll be completely honest in that I'm still working out the whole Mastodon thing so haven't really started to look at any of this.

Thanks for the tag though as it gives me a great jumping off point to start my #a11y journey here!

@Hart365 @passis YOU BETTER HOP TO IT, MIKE!!

Heh…. Hope you are doing well!

@jamesnovak @passis

πŸ˜‚

I'm good thank buddy. How's things with you fella?

@passis

@doot Do you or someone from your instance have any additions?

@nerdybutcute

@passis how do I join some of the lists you mentioned. Do I need to create an account on all the different servers? I tried to sign up for some of the disability lists you mentioned, but it doesn’t accept my existing Mastodon password
