Microsoft’s Activision deal is on life support because cloud gaming still sucks

Editorial: Of the reasons to block Microsoft’s $68.7 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard, Sean never dreamed that “We need to stop Microsoft from dominating cloud gaming” would be the one.

@seanhollister Totally agree. Such a terrible misread on the idea that cloud gaming needs more platforms. Google and Amazon are the only other cloud compute platforms and their attempts at game streaming were laughable. Xbox is trying to build an agnostic subscription service and I bet it would happily sell it via PlayStation!
@seamus Something needs to break the status quo if cloud gaming is ever going to take off. I don't know that the merger would have done it, but... something.
@seanhollister I’ve thought a lot recently about why my son still plays a lot of Roblox as he enters his late teens. And I think it’s the fact he and his friends can switch games so quickly - no waiting for a 50GB install and wasting an evening, They want fast twitch games to work, but don’t care about it looking amazing. I haven’t quite put my finger on it but I think getting the network to ‘feel’ flawless is the trick, but fast game switching will transform a night of social gaming for his generation once they feel confident it works.
@seamus so true about the importance of “just working”. I don’t know why Sony hasn’t nailed that with the PS5 for instance despite having auto update and always on options. Missed a session of Genshin Impact just last night with the kids because of that
