Exo1 protects DNA nicks from ligation to promote crossover formation during meiosis

Crossovers between homologous chromosomes in meiosis result from biased resolution of Holliday junction intermediates, but can DNA nicks present in Holliday junctions provide the appropriate information? This study presents genetic evidence that the nuclease Exo1 promotes meiotic crossing over by protecting DNA nicks from ligation.
