Welcome #NewUser

If you are coming from Twitter, you understandably may feel like it is a lot quieter here. Mastodon is not "dead," but there is no #algorithm bombarding you with stuff. Here you develop your own user experience by searching out and following people and things that interest you. You can pretty quickly build a much more satisfying experience, but it takes a little effort. Following #hashtags is a good way to get started. Be patient and join in conversations.

@mastodonmigration And don't forget that the #Fediverse is bigger than just #Mastodon. There is a whole universe of #ActivityPub based #social_networks communicating together, out there!
@mastodonmigration @FediFollows is a great place to find accounts that may interest you.
@mastodonmigration welcome!! We’re so glad you’re here!! Let’s follow each other! The more people we know the bigger our hearts will grow!
@mastodonmigration for me the content comes in bursts. I'll sometimes wonder if there is a problem when I've not seen anything in an hour but then a bunch of new posts will show up in a burst. There is no algorithm to keep the feed 'topped off' which is more natural and makes the whole experience much less habit-forming.

@mastodonmigration

It's worth pointing out that, because there is no algorithm totalling things up, the two ways of reacting to a post work differently than in other networks

Favourite = send my personal thanks to the original poster

Boost = show this to more people.

Basically, if you want to spread an item, Boost it. Boost does only two things:
* It shows it to people who follow you
* it puts it in the feed for the server you are on, as though you posted it.

@mastodonmigration

So things /can/ go viral on Mastodon, but only if you Boost them. And even then they do it rather less spectacularly. They rise less, and fall away quite quickly.

@mastodonmigration I was thinking about this the other day, at first it feels odd, it requires a bit more work on my side, but then it starts working and the feed is much better (content, interactions, it's more peaceful too)
@germanio @mastodonmigration 100% same experience for me. I thought “not sure this will last” but after a couple of weeks of following people who got boosted by people I already followed, I have a really exciting feed. And much more on topic.

@mastodonmigration

Tell me how do I follow a hashtag? (Android app)

Or where is the FAQ?

@jztusk @mastodonmigration

@feditips has a lot of useful info for those just getting started.

Welcome!

@mastodonmigration
I can verify that Mastodon is far from quiet even if it initially feels that way. The reason it is quiet, is that there is no algorithm spoon-feeding us with promoted, viral or artificially boosted posts. You pick your own content, and although that takes a little more time, it is so worth it! Search, read, and drink from the fire hose to discover your new people or topics/#tags to follow.
@mastodonmigration There is an algorithm, the "trending posts" feed (Explore > Posts on the web interface). It lists all the most boosted and favourited posts on the server over the last day or so. It's great for finding popular content and users, especially if you're just getting started—for example, it's how I found this post!
@mastodonmigration hi new poeples who see this (above) post and welcome 👋

@mastodonmigration

Once you get 400+ good accounts that post a lot, it really feels busy.

@mastodonmigration When advising people to follow hashtags, it's equally salient to advise then to hashtag their posts (tsk tsk) ☝️

#MastoTips #ProTip

@mastodonmigration definitely needs some type of selectable or configurable “algorithm”. It gets a little too repetitive sometimes.
@mastodonmigration this discourse is valid for sure, but so weird to me because I come from #Twitter but like, early-ish Twitter. The algorithm wasn't driving everything yet. Mastodon feels more like home
@mastodonmigration ok, but close to zero people actually consciously want to do that
@mastodonmigration Are we all migrating to Blue Sky after this?
