Because I’m seeing toxic positivity floating around lately….

It’s okay to be sad. It’s okay to be anxious, frustrated, depressed, bummed, or even entirely sickened by the state of the world. It’s okay to feel a visceral need to howl in the face of injustice. It’s okay to grieve and worry and weep.

Those feelings are as much a part of life as happiness.

Ignore anyone who tries to shame you by calling you “negative.” You are a human, not a highlight reel.

@SarahGrey I do not think I ever heard the term "toxic positivity", but it makes every kind of sense. Thank you.

@mjjzf You’re welcome! Here’s a terrific article on it, and why it’s so harmful:

@SarahGrey spot on Sarah. The article is a good read too.
@SarahGrey Even those of us who are not human feel despair about what is happening.
@SarahGrey @Adam_Cadmon1 ❤️ yes! even Jesus flipped tables and cried over a dead child that He subsequently raised, right?
@SarahGrey @donmelton 💯 Also, the meme pics attached to this posts often evoke memories of bad LSD trips, rather than happiness.
@SarahGrey Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Preach.

It's not only OK to feel so, it's of the utmost importance, because these are the feelings that can bring about the will to act, to change things. The will to fight for a better world.
Also it shows that one still has a working moral compass.
How am I supposed to feel in the face of pain and injustice? That's right! Angry and sad. And bloody angry, again!
@SarahGrey its not lately, but already in pre-Corona-Years
@SarahGrey It's a shame society spends so much time trying to police others' emotions when it could spend time valuing/cultivating empathy and holding space for authentic expressions of feeling, which create meaningful human interaction and healing.
@SarahGrey This resonates. "I'm a human, not a highlight reel" is going to be with me for a while.

@SarahGrey

"But people are supposed to be depressed sometimes! We invented the drug for people too depressed to get off the floor. Not because you missed your bus, or you don't look good in a yellow hat. That's just wrong. I mean, without his pain and his sadness, could Van Gogh have painted all that stuff? ...[M]y point is: you can't be happy all the time! That's life!"
