Managed to cobble a provisionally workable workspace. Had to. #UbuntuStudio 23.04 upgrade bricks the Main Machine on boot, only accessible by ssh from an hp with broken keys who upgraded without incident.

A tiny bit of progress, but having already spent far too many hours on it, I take what I can get: the culprit, unsurprisingly, is the PROPRIETARY driver from NVIDIA, 390 is toxic.
I wiped the machine of all traces of Nvidia, reinstalled the opensource nouveaux driver and while it is low rez 1024x768 and ugly as sin, unlike the work of paid pros, it works.
I might update that assessment to "ugly AND annoying"
Ahβ¦ quite unexpectedly, switching from xfce back to kde plasma suddenly everything looks like it was. Although window manager actions are sluggish, apps themselves are fine. Who would have thoughtβ¦
And for everyone who hasn't a clue what that all means, I commend you for making wiser life choices than mine! π
