The Nikkei​ piece says, “the Western nations have mistakenly judged #India to be as democratic as they are”. This despite the #Modi government taking “a series of steps to suppress religious minorities in the country…(and) #Muslims in India face much the same predicament as Islamic people in #China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region”. "Muslims in India face much the same predicament as #uighurs under #CCP" is ridiculously hyperbolic way of comparing the situations.

The growing repression of civil and religious liberties in increasingly hindu-fundamentalist India is a serious issue that all democracies should be addressing, but Uighurs (and #Tibetans) are facing actual #genocide — erasure as distinct peoples with their own histories, cultures, languages, written scripts, religions...

Think concentration camps, indefinite imprisonment without cause, forced sterilization, *total* surveillance, forced "re-education" (brainwashing) and no hope for a future beyond an "#untermensch" status.
