Going through my tea boxes I found a small packet of Meng Ding Huang Ya, aka Misty Peak Yellow Tips, from Rivers and Lakes Tea. With all the talk of yellow tea recently, thought it would be good to review. As you can see, the pick standard and finishing shape is quite different from the Taiwanese yellow I tried a few weeks ago. Similar flavor/scent to the nutty chestnut-like character of dragonwell, but with touch more sweetness.

@ellestad @tea @futurebird sounds nice! I’m not familiar with yellow tea, but am a devoted fan of dragonwell. I always go for the nutty flavor
@tylerzonia Basically, similar in process to green tea, but between kill green and drying, yellow tea is allowed to gently oxidize in a warm moist environment for a period of time. Meng Ding Huang Ya is a very well known example from Sichuan. But, yeah, one of the more obscure types of Chinese tea.
@tylerzonia This particular one is a bud only pick, so kind of half way between dragonwell green and silver needle white teas. Also, Rivers and Lakes is a good company AND ships from the US!
@ellestad @tea Nice! Do you know if this is made from a Longjing varietal, or do you think the Dragonwell similarity is more due to being lightly roasted and having the leaves flattened?
@dave_heumann Mingshan No 9 is the varietal (though I'm drinking the 2022 version). https://riversandlakestea.net/2023-meng-ding-huang-ya-yellow-tea/ @tea
