One of the cruelest jokes society plays on the #autistic community is drilling into the brains of very young children with a predisposition for creative, out-of-the-box problem solving, and telling them that they themselves are, in fact, The Problem.

@orangegoldgreen if you said this every minute for the rest of time it wouldn't be enough.

@orangegoldgreen @actuallyautistic

I recently looked up 'hyperlexia and autism' (for an article, looking for references and stats), and to my astonishment all the first results were about how it's a *problem* and (even) how to 'cure' your child from wanting to recognise and form letters and numbers earlier than they're meant to.

Big eye roll. 🙄

@KatyElphinstone @actuallyautistic Yikes 😳 I didn't know that was a thing, but in hindsight the only people who responded positively to my hyperlexia as a child were likely neurodivergent themselves..

@vincent

Exactly what I wondered.
Maybe the lack of conformism just scares people?
Maybe if people learn to read sooner, they may get a chance to learn things you don't want them to?
No idea 🤔

@orangegoldgreen @actuallyautistic

@KatyElphinstone @orangegoldgreen @actuallyautistic oh no, the autists are learning /s

It's painful to hear that literally just. Learning and being interested in a core life skill is pathologised
