Writing Wonders Day 4/1: Tell 2 truths and 1 lie about your WIP.

My WIP is the third part of a second-world fantasy series.

======================

ANSWER: As @falxcerebri correctly surmised 1 and 3 seem to be mutually exclusive.

The practice of magic is technically illegal in many places, and the normal source has "dried up". But it's still available.

(Yes, evolution happens but includes magic, and creatures are modified.)

Writing Wonders Day 4/2: What’s the education system like in your world?

Education system? What's one of those?

Most people can't read but they don't need to, although the MC in this series can. (The Ruthelin character can, but the goddess can't.)

People grow up to carry on the family business.

Writing Wonders Day 4/3: If your MC had a wanted poster, what info would be on it?

She is wanted by at least two groups, but only one of them might consider a poster.

----

Miralees Fornata

Circus Performer and Thief

Wanted for use of magic and stealing valuable artifacts from the Duke.

Most likely in the company of a mute woman.

Alive 5 soldo, Dead 10 roi

----

Five soldo will keep someone for two and a half years, a roi is enough for a week.

Writing Wonders Day 4/4: MC POV: If you could teach one subject what would it be?

Miralees: Juggling. I mean I'm already showing Effie and Yelantera. I can't really teach them to be acrobats when we're travelling all the time.

Yelantera: It is fair exchange for the services I provide.

Eftena: (laughs silently)

Writing Wonders Day 4/5: On a typical day, what sounds does your MC hear after they wake up?

Depends on where they happen to be but recently it's been the ocean and the creaking of the ship's timbers and rigging.

(I am mildly annoyed, because I went to the trouble of creating a new 3D render for today, but the render farm I use is down and I can't get at the finished image. We'll have to make do with this one.)

Writing Wonders Day 4/6: What is your MC’s morning (wake-up) routine like?

If the dragon and gryphon don't need to feed then eat leftovers, tidy up the area and put everything back in the bags. Maybe do some stretches, but usually just take to the air.

But every couple of days the they need to feed which means, eat leftovers, build up the fire, run through all her stretches and moves for acrobatics, then juggling practice before moving on.

Writing Wonders Day 4/7: Name one sound and one scent that occurs in your MC’s worst nightmare.

Silence and rotting flesh. If only she knew why.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/8: MC POV: What is something you never leave home without?

Miralees: My juggling balls. As my mother always says, if you have them with you you can always make money to live.

Yelantera: We do not have enough juggling balls for three people.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/9: Describe your MC’s style as if in a fashion magazine.

Pass. But here's a few pictures of the MC's different styles.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/10: Name one unusual thing in your MC’s home.

It's a caravan.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/11: Secondary character POV: What annoys you the most about the MC?

Eftena: [Never speaks, but she's almost never irritated by anything.]

Yelantera: I find the mistress's lack of understanding of the true fundamentals of trade to be surprising but it is also an opportunity for instruction.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/12: Does your MC have a healthy lifestyle?

Well, she's not dead yet, despite being in numerous lethal situations. I'm not sure that's a healthy lifestyle though.

She keeps herself fit and eats properly although sometimes her diet ends up being just meat when they're on the road.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/13: How physically fit is your MC?

Very. And she works hard to stay that way.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/14: MC POV: What qualities do you find attractive in a person?

Miralees looks embarrassed.

"I don't know, I don't have that kind of experience."

But you see so many people, every performance, don't you?

"I don't look at individuals." She sighs. "Yes, my mother and sister-in-law might point out some man or other. I go along with it."

You mean they don't appeal? What does?

"If she has a nice smile."

CW: To hide the big reveal 🙃

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/15: Name one thing that’s really difficult for your MC but not other people.

Despite travelling all over her world, Miralees isn't very good at dealing with non-circus people.

She doesn't talk to them beyond a smile and a "thank you" for gratuities, they're just the audience. Not real people at all.

Now she has no choice and eventually defaults to her usual mode: everything is a performance.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/16: Name one thing that makes your MC excited during the story.

Tricky because most of what happens is just stressful. But there are a couple of instances in the series.

She does get excited when she's being taken to the dressmaker for her feast outfit, nothing like that has ever happened to her before and she never expected it to.

There's also a nervous excitement the first time she puts on a performance with Eftena and Yelantera.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/17: Secondary character POV: What do you secretly admire about the MC?

Yelantera: "The goddess has chosen the mistress to be her protector. Miss Fornata is more important than she believes, I am honoured to be her advisor."

CW: Eye contact. Made this one especially for this reply - because I can.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/18: Does your MC have a love interest?

Well there was Daria but that probably wasn't love. As for the future maybe, but y'know, spoilers.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/19: What things from your world / story would you like to exist in real life?

Well, my dragons are cool.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/20: MC POV: What is your idea of a perfect day?

Miralees: A great performance with an appreciative audience, then unwinding around the fire with the whole circus, with good food and songs.

It feels so far away, someone else's life.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/21: Do dreams play a role in your story?

They do not. But they might.

Personally, I don't remember my own dreams so I don't really think about other people having them.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

22: What does your MC like about your antagonist?

She's encountered him briefly twice (in three books). She doesn't like him.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/23: If your MC went to a masquerade ball, how would they dress?

There aren't any masquerade balls but if she went to one she would probably look something like the picture.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/24: Are there any tropes that you purposely chose to include or avoid?

As a pantser, I don't plan anything. So I don't think about tropes. Having said that you'll never catch me fridging anyone.

One thing in my Dragons of Esternes series was playing with the love triangle much beloved in YA. I didn't plan it (of course) but the potential emerged so I played it up a bit.

Forgotten Trope - TV Tropes

These are the tropes that are one step beyond Dead Horse Tropes and Discredited Tropes; not only are they not used straight, they're not used at all. You won't find this in any current series; they have disappeared from the writer's toolbox. Note …

Writing Wonders Day 4/25: Does your MC see themself as a hero, or as something else?

I have never written a single MC that ever considered themselves a hero.

Most of them can't fight (one exception) even though they end up in situations where that would be useful.

They simply do what they have to do as best they can - even when they don't really know what that is, which is mostly.

It's just a matter of doing the next right thing.

Writing Wonders Day 4/26: Would your MC enjoy a fashion makeover or run the other way?

Well she gets one, and enjoyed it. It wasn't something she'd ever expected to happen.

Unfortunately it also involved people dying and other bad things...

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/27: What types of scenes are easiest for you to write? Do you know why?

The ones that flow best are action scenes (and that includes sex scenes when I do them - they're just action scenes).

And I can let my characters talk to each other forever. I have to hold back on that.

The hardest scenes are the connective tissue where not a lot is happening.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/28: How would your antagonist celebrate their birthday?

The person I am using as the antagonist ... not something he'd do, if he even knew when it was.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/29: Does your MC have a weakness or Achilles heel that regularly trips them up?

I'm not really sure how to answer this, not because my MCs are perfect (far from it), but simply because I don't think about it.

There's no Achilles heel, they're just imperfect people doing the best they can. And sometimes getting it very wrong.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

Writing Wonders Day 4/30: If your MC met a psychic, what would they ask?

So much spoilers.

#writingWonders #writingCommunity

@adaddinsane I hate what I call A to B scenes. Sections which are essential to the plot but really dull to write. 🤔
@adaddinsane That's the challenging thing in these story worlds. It's not often the MC gets to be pampered without something nasty happening ... Can't chill out without a guilt trip after.
@adaddinsane This raises the question of what it means to be a hero. Does it necessarily have to have anything to do with fighting? Is someone like Rosa Parks a hero for quiet resistance to oppression?
Maybe the difference is that people like Rosa Parks don’t think of themselves as heroic, whereas people like Putin probably do. But then our understanding of heroism is seriously skewed.
@adaddinsane Cool dragons are always a winner.
