@zens In a brown guy in India, with two generations before me choosing to move states and marry outside of "cultural norms" - my last name, primary language and neutral accent doesn't add up to the stereotype people expect. Have been subject to the same script everywhere i go in my own country. I now reply "I'm from planet Earth, *you* must be new here!"

@harshad @[email protected] extremely frustrating. I keep getting the "Are you from Kerala?" when I am from Andhra Pradesh.

How the hell does it matter where someone is from? It's probably the most banal thing you could know about a person.

@harshad @[email protected] oh, and I did briefly live in Aus for 4.5 years in the late noughties, and my parents would frequently get something like this:

"Oh nice to meet you, when did you move here?"

immediately followed by

"Nice, and how long are you here for?"

This is exactly like asking a guest "how long are you planning to stay at our house?".
