Wangari Maathai, a #Kenyan #environmentalist, political activist, author and #Nobel Peace Prize winner, was the first woman in East and Central #Africa to earn a doctorate degree. She is best known for founding the Green Belt Movement in 1977, a #grassroots non-governmental organization focused on environmental #conservation and women's rights through tree-planting programs.

Throughout her career, Maathai was a staunch advocate for #sustainable development, #social #justice, and #democracy.
