I have a 30 year old radio than can be powered by hand crank and automatically turns on when an emergency alert is broadcast but the best my smartphone can do is a 240 character emergency alert or text notifications from whatever app I've installed?

Are we sure this is technology progress?

Cell Broadcast - Wikipedia

@kkarhan Cell Broadcast is what I was referring to when I mentioned the "240 character message". For reference I was in a tornado warning last night and noticed how much easier it is to get info from an old radio than my phone.

@nix yes and no.

#CellBroadcast has the advantage - like #PTY31 [#RDS on #FM-based USW Radio] to non only use existing tech and devices, but being localized.

OFC they can advise people to tune in to a local station at a certain frequency for detailed info.

@kkarhan The NOAA weather broadcasts are also localized, maybe not as much as Cell Broadcast? But I like that it also covered some near-ish areas that my family lives in.

@nix OFC that's what #NOAA and #NWS should do as publicly-funded services.

And OFC there are plethera of #data #radio applications - espechally in aerospace and maritime setups - that provice weather data both locally, regionally and even globally...
