Good mixing and production won't save a bad song (what's colloquially called Polishing a Turd, excuse my crassness) but bad mixing can ruin a good song.

Casual listeners won't be able to discern that a song is "good" and that it's the mix that is bad. If one major element of a song sounds unprofessional, the whole song will sound unprofessional, and thus Not As Good as all the professionals they've been exposed to in the mainstream.

Songwriters, Professionals in the industry, and audiophiles may be able to tell the difference, but even they can rate a potential good song lower if it's not presented well. Humans are emotionally-driven creatures, esp. when it comes to #music, and good production and mixing contribute to how strongly someone responds to a song.

I would alter this meme to read: Before Production (Demo), After Production, and After Mixing, but you get the idea

Mixing/mastering is absolutely essential to get your song up to a pro music industry standard and make it sound consistent across different listening systems. Mastering is also a whole-ass profession in and of itself. Yes, it can also ruin a song if done poorly. But I personally feel most GOOD songs are ruined in either the production or the mixing stage. Getting a song re-mastered is easier than getting the mix right, and re-mixing is easier than getting the production right #MusicReview #Music

I can't tell you what makes a #song good, as it's so subjective. I definitely cannot tell you what makes a song great, as music industry people have been trying to figure that out since forever.

I can only share with you some elements that TEND TO make a song bad. And by "song" I mean the whole finished package: the sound recording of a musical piece. Because that's what I review, and that's what the public hears on radio or streaming.
