Thought I’d share this old poem about eggcorns again, but this time without all the Belgian whistles.
@brianbilston
A nice thing about sharing this on Mastodon is that our international friends can see that even native English speakers find the language baffling :)
@brianbilston Too good to be left in the Chester drawers
@brianbilston What is "damp squid" supposed to be?
@peterdrake Damp squib (an exploding thingy they use in films, that didn't go off).

@brianbilston I worked with a guy once - literally every sentence he uttered was one of these.

"Don't do that, you'll be pussyfooting in the water (or pissing in the water)."

"They have everything under the moon."

Plus many more.

@brianbilston Blood pressure rising. I’m assuming that was the aim.

@brianbilston
Let's sniff that in the butt

Anyway, "high dungeon"? I don't get that one.

@brianbilston reminds me of a bed cover/blanket with English text on it. The reasoning was: if the spelling is alike, so must the pronunciation be. They put "Sweat Dreams" on it...

@brianbilston English spelling rules are very easy to remember: "You must learn the spelling of each individual word".

English is tough, but through thorough thought we'll work it out!

@brianbilston Reading this gave me a pit in my stomach
