I’m not much one for sharing TikTok videos here, but this one seems like one that will be taught in history classes some day
@jerry holy shit. I have no words for that
@jerry not in Florida or Tennessee but definitely. The way the accuser just tried to talk down to him like a child and then he calmly turned his words against him and delivered an MLK-worthy speech that hit all the points was amazing.
@jerry with any luck, it will be discussed as the turning point when america’s politics turned its back on fascism and the far-right
@Cali @jerry
It is just discouraging when our grandchildren look at us and ask why we let his happen ? They don’t know that we fought these battles before, but some of our generation grew tired, some grew disillusioned, some fell into the religion trap. It is hard not to be disheartened.
@PJLavatai @Cali @jerry Yeah, I feel this. I remember 1968 and despair that's where we are again.
@jerry Seeing stuff like this is such a wake up call for those of us who have taken the Civil Rights movement for granted but it is heartening to see a new generation of leaders emerge.
@jerry @StillIRise1963 Wow. Powerful words from a powerful young man.
@jerry wow this is why they want to kill TikTok
@jerry Wow. I keep to UK politics usually, but this speech by #JustinPearson is as you say, one for the history books. And so beautifully spoken.
#USPolitics #JustinPearson
@jerry lovely speech, delivered beautifully. May I be lazy and ask for a brief backstory to this please?

@Chaft @jerry His speech outside the house provides more context.

They were expelled because they spoke out of turn on the floor, because they protested against gun violence.

He is mesmerizing to listen to, he speaks like a preacher. Like a certain Reverend Doctor who died in Tennessee.

> The national hubbub began on March 30, when Tennessee lawmakers Rep. Justin J. Jones, of Nashville, and Rep. Justin Pearson, of Memphis, disrupted statehouse proceedings with megaphones and led protests calling for stricter gun control in the wake of a mass shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville. The demonstration was a powerful break from political inertia around the long-debated issue, and made headlines. “We occupied the House floor today after repeatedly being silenced from talking about the crisis of mass shootings,” Jones wrote on Twitter, shortly after the demonstrations. “We could not go about business as usual as thousands were protesting outside demanding action.”

@Chaft @jerry As I understand it: After *another* mass shooting, this time at a school in Tennessee, students organized a large protest at the state legislature. The #TennesseeThree, State Representatives Justin Pearson, Justin Johnson, and Gloria Johnson, supported the students and joined them in speaking out. Their Republican colleagues found some technicality that they said was against the legislature's rules and held a vote to expell them.
@Chaft @jerry This speech took place during the debate before the vote. The Republicans voted to expell both Justins, but Gloria was spared by one vote. As she pointed out after, she is a 62yo white woman, and they are young black men.
@paprikapink @Chaft @jerry
What they don’t understand is that it was “invisible “ white women who joined forces with the black community during the Civil Rights movement. Lazy old white men who can’t cook their own dinner, clean their own homes, or pick their own cotton….nothing new.
@Chaft @jerry
There was a shooting in Nashville. 3 children and three adults killed.
Children and adults came to the capitol to protest and three representatives broke protocol to support the protestors, Justin Pearson (who is Black), Justin Jones (who is Filipino and Black) (who are 28 and 27 respectively) and and a 60 year old white woman, Gloria Johnson.
They should have been censured for the breach of protocol but since they are all Dems and two are Black in a very white House, the House members decided to EXPEL them. Votes were taken and Johnson (the white woman) was NOT expelled, the other two were. TN is a very backward racist state.

@jerry

Oh yes, this does need to be heard by as many people as possible.

I will also say to my fellow Albertans, that if we reelect the current government in May, this speech will be needed in the Alberta Legislature sooner than you think.

@jerry eloquence defined. Damn!
Rep. Pearson, you've left me speechless.
@jerry What an amazing (essentially) extemporaneous speech. Justin Pearson has a great political career ahead of him, with or without Tennessee.
@jerry I believe that things are about to get interesting in TN.
@jerry
The speech was more than impressive
What an impressive young man
Great words, well and calmly expressed, just impressive
Who wants to oppose him there still something
All the best for his future, may he stay like this
@si_irini @jerry
Unfortunately, Tennessee is a very dangerous place for intelligent, eloquent black men.

@jerry well, damn. I hope his community sends him back to his seat.
Shaun King on Instagram: "🤬🤯 These bigots and whites supremacists in the Tennessee State legislature REFUSED to expel a CHILD MOLESTER.⁣ ⁣ They had a legislator who literally TOOK A PISS in another members chair. No expulsion. ⁣ ⁣ They’ve had members who beat their wives… no expulsion. ⁣ ⁣ They’ve had members brought up on charges of fraud and theft…. No expulsion. ⁣ ⁣ And this Black man peacefully protested gun violence and the lack of effort to curb it…. AND THEY REMOVED HIM FROM HIS ELECTED OFFICE.⁣ ⁣ It’s a low point in American democracy. ⁣ ⁣ This is a sign of both where we are and where we are going. I’m so proud of @brotherjones_ for standing up for hope and change."

@jerry that cracker Farmer really wanted to say: “you know what you did, boy? You git why you’s in the dawghouse? Hmm?!”
@jerry yep… there you have it…
@jerry let me know when it's uploaded on a different platform then I might watch it.
@jerry powerful speech - he has a big future I think.

@jerry Far be it from me to sign up anyone to watch what is basically 8 hours of CSPAN-ish video but the entire thing just tells so much of the story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlMge0Scyck&list=PLuDMdahyhQ0DnyHqSAwXU-vpuMxfc95IT&index=1

I agree, of the 1.5 hours or so I watched, this moment was it and should be taught.

Tennessee House Votes to Expel 2 Democratic Representatives

@jerry These two wonderful young Black reps are truly channeling MLK and Malcolm X to me. They speak truth to power and have an eloquence that the TN Republicans in the legislature could only dream of.
@jerry damn... His composure alone in the face of a man who clearly wants to belittle him is awe inspiring. And then the speech on top of that? *chefs kiss*
@jerry Justin Pearson is more than the TN State House. The 75 who voted him out just made him a household name. I expect a meteoric (deservedly) rise.
