This is a good piece, from 2019, about how the risk from AI becoming "self aware" and oppressing us is overblown while talking about the real risks from AI to worry about, including economic disruption, failures in life-critical applications and weaponization by bad actors. The piece tries to explain the decoupling between intelligence and the drive to dominate.

"But because AI systems did not pass through the crucible of natural selection, they did not need to evolve a survival instinct. In AI, intelligence and survival are decoupled, and so intelligence can serve whatever goals we set for it. Recognizing this fact, science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov proposed his famous First Law of Robotics: “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.” It is unlikely that we will unwittingly end up under the thumbs of our digital masters."

My favorite part of the piece though is in the screen grab 👇🏾

Don’t Fear the Terminator

Artificial intelligence never needed to evolve, so it didn’t develop the survival instinct that leads to the impulse to dominate others

Really great interview with Suresh Venkatasubramanian, former White House AI policy advisor to President Biden about the dangers of perpetuating discussions about “sentient” AI that does not exist, as well as what he considers to be an organized campaign around AI disinformation. 👇🏾

As always, tech charlatans leading the way in spreading blatant misinformation about generative AI tools.

"If large swaths of the public believe that we are on the cusp of giving birth to advanced machine intelligence, the hype not only pads the bottom line of companies like Google and OpenAI, but helps them avoid taking responsibility for the bias and harm that result from those systems."

For the Love of God, AI Chatbots Can’t ‘Decide’ to Do Anything

Tech charlatans and U.S. Senators are now spreading misinformation about predictive AI tools, which are not sentient.

Pretty fascinating that Elon, one of the original backers of OpenAI (see screen grab on the left), has now signed a letter calling for "a 6 month pause in developing systems more powerful than GPT-4", while at the same time recruiting a team to develop a rival to ChatGPT (see screen grab on the right) to fight "woke AI"

Fighting ‘Woke AI,’ Musk Recruits Team to Develop OpenAI Rival

Elon Musk has approached artificial intelligence researchers in recent weeks about forming a new research lab to develop an alternative to ChatGPT, the high-profile chatbot made by the startup OpenAI, according to two people with direct knowledge of the effort and a third person briefed on the ...

Good piece here about how the "Open letter" signed by many including Elon, distracts from the real issues, making it harder to address them, and plays right into the hands of the companies putting out these black boxes including the "non woke one" that Elon is trying to build 👇🏾

Misinformation, labor impact, and safety are all risks. But not in the way the letter implies.

Even the robots know that the "AI" hype by the charlatans is far fetched.

Another good piece here by Dr.Linda McIver, the Executive Director of the Australian Data Science Education Institute, about not falling for the "AI" hype being pushed by the tech bros especially OpenAI calling their generative models "Artificial General Intelligence" or the other bros warning about "AI becoming sentient" 👇🏾

There’s no such thing as Artificial Intelligence

There truly is no such thing as Artificial Intelligence. But, but ChatGPT, you cry! But self-driving cars! But The Algorithm! None of these are even close to intelligent. But how do we know?

Decided to see what the Bing logo at the bottom of my Edge browser on iOS does.

"New" Bing/Chad can go fly off a cliff without a parachute.

*NO, Chad, I ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT* enable my mic for you to be able to hear me.
