• Autism Speaks recommended the Judge Rotenburg Center, which used extreme electroshock torture as the norm to "correct" autistic behaviour in autistic children (https://www.autistichoya.com/2013/11/an-unholy-alliance-autism-speaks-and.html)

• Autism Speaks' directors had almost entirely non-autistic members except for John Elder Robison, who resigned because he disagreed with their focus on genes instead of actually helping autistic people (https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-981-13-8437-0_16, excerpts below)

An Unholy Alliance: Autism Speaks and the Judge Rotenberg Center

Thoughts on disability justice, neurodiversity, intersectional activism from Lydia Brown, 2011-2020.

So for #AutismAcceptanceMonth:

• Support organisations ran by and for #Autistic people, like the #AutisticSelfAdvocacyNetwork (#ASAN);

• Do not discriminate against autistic people – accomodate, listen, and understand their needs;

• Don't support Autism Speaks or use their puzzle piece symbolism or the colour blue;

• Opt for #RedInstead, #LightItUpGold, and red/gold/rainbow infinity loops, the symbol of neurodiversity;

and most importantly:

• Listen to and uplift #ActuallyAutistic voices!
