In Germany, teaching the Holocaust is mandatory.

It includes visits to concentration camp, museums, etc. They don't shy away from their own ugly history. Yet the kids aren't damaged; they're strengthened, matured, humbled. The U.S. needs to do same with slavery.

Not that complicated.

*Are the #US on a road to a #NewCivilWar or to a resolution of #SystemicRacism?*

Truthful history education in the #US would be quintessential, yes, but very hard, because πŸ‘‰the US are built as a #SlaverNation right from the startπŸ‘ˆ, as film maker #MatthewCooke brilliantly argues in the episode "Slaver Nation" of his #podcast, #AmericanOriginStories:

#Slavery' s been an integral part since its founding, woven into the very fabric of all #US nation-building for centuries, not just the, say..

As #MathewCooke rightly argues, #Reconstruction, the #NewDeal, and the #CivilRights as well as the #BLM movements did not resolve these conflicts and injustices, which have indeed resulted in #SystemicRacism and a inequality of living standards and chances in life for these groups.

The vilification of #CRT and the structured assault on #US #schoolboards led by...

Instead, the tides are turning very much against the #PoC, #NativeAmericans, #Jews, the #LGBTQIA+ community, and #women.

(The same is true to a lesser degree for #Latinos and #AsianAmericans.
The ugly beast of the #WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) movement, rears its ugly head again, like in the 1930's-1940's, even in name, as #AmericaFirst: #Christofascism.

Ever since #Jan6, and also in particular since...

While teaching true history is undeniable quintessential to avoid a renewed breaking apart of the #US, I am afraid that the nation is as far away from this idea as it was during #WWII before the grand-jury indictments of 24 #US Congressmen for #SeditiousConspiracy, among
other crimes.

The fact that this #fascist history is almost...

@HistoPol
Compromises surrounding slavery were at the heart of the process that formed the Union. The 2nd Amendment for example enabled states to maintain armed militias to suppress slave revolts and hunt fugitive slaves. The Union was an uneasy alliance kept together by the threat of British power. The alliance unraveled as soon as that threat vanished and deep cultural divides have continued to drive American politics. The Civil Rights movement led to Nixon's Southern Strategy to today's #gop

Exactly #Cooke's central point.
Could literally be a quote from his script. πŸ˜€

@Annaeus @HistoPol The South was ready to pack up & go home at the Constitutional Convention, causing its failure. They demanded and got such things as equal representation of states in the Senate.

How would history have been different if the South had demanded an explicit exit clause in the Constitution?
