A win for Mastodon and journalism: The successful campaign to stave off closure of the @TexasObserver got a boost from the magazine’s fan base in the #fediverse. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/29/texas-observer-closing-gofundme?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
Texas Observer journalists raise $270,000 in bid to save publication

Magazine’s editors asked board not to lay off anyone for a month if staff raised $200,000 after Friday’s vote to cease publication

The Guardian
Curious if there are other examples so far of #fediverse or #mastodon being credited with having a real world impact on events.
@joolia Jury's still out on this one - though we're up to 2 potential leads now! 🤞https://mastodon.social/@misc/110062023613801469
@misc @joolia Well, let’s give it a little boost and see, shall we? :) Good luck!
@joolia @TexasObserver Considering the age structure of the Fediverse, I'm not sure if the baton isn't passed sideways as far as the generations are concerned. 😉
@joolia @TexasObserver This needs to be boosted in a big way. Whatever Musk is doing at Twitter pales by comparison...
@joolia @TexasObserver

unfortunately not quite right. mastodon is not the fediverse but only a part of it.
Mastodon is only one of many accesses and you unfortunately underestimate the others like
#Friendica #Hubzilla #Pleroma #Misskey #Calckey #Peertube #Pixelfed etc. which are also accesses to the fediverse and only together form this network.
@joolia
Great job all involved with the campaign. I don't like that the Guardian equate the fediverse with just Mastodon though.
@TexasObserver
@joolia @TexasObserver now all we need is good local papers everywhere...
@joolia @TexasObserver I've been a reader for quite some time and a subscriber too so this is great news!
@joolia @TexasObserver It's nice to see the good guys win once in a while.
@joolia @TexasObserver Good news. Great cause. Smart writers.
