1. This is a thread about the pointlessness of calling out the U.S. right wing on its “hypocrisy.”

The most important thing to understand about the right wing is that there’s no such thing as hypocrisy, a double standard, or a logical contradiction. That was the old system.
Now, it’s all about the exercise of power, all the time.
It will be this way for the rest of our lives.

2. You can rant yourself hoarse if you like, but realize — they know.
They know they want the First Amendment to apply only to themselves.
They know it’s not small government when they surveil our wombs.
They know it’s not individual liberty when police terrorize Black people.
They know that they’re not “protecting children” by banning books and drag queens, while championing the gun lobby’s campaign to flood our communities with weapons of war.

3. They are not aiming for consistency. They are not pursuing a political philosophy. They want power, and they are in the process of taking it by any means they can.
They are thrilled for you to waste your breath pointing out their “hypocrisies.”

Everything they do is an exercise of power.
You can’t defeat them by explicating their contradictions.

You defeat them by taking away their power.

@Julie Oh, yes, a thousand times this.
I despair how obvious this is, yet how blind to it so many are.
there’s that old definition of insanity, which is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result… You’d think that four years of Trump might have made people suspect that saying “hypocrite” wasn’t the telling blow they’d hoped for, but no…
I said almost exactly this earlier today, and there are several much longer essays written over *years* referenced in there.

@[email protected] Part of the problem, though, is that the hypocrisy is the point, just as the lying is the point, and the cruelty is the point. The former President of the United States lied daily, egregiously and deliberately, and people saying “what a hypocrite” had exactly zero effect, because he wasn’t just immune from criticism, he was lying on purpose. Assuming that right-wing “hypocrites” share your fundamental beliefs in the foundations of democracy, or even society, is handing them a victory even before they tell their first lie, because they *don’t* care about your rules and values, and will gladly use them to beat you, laugh when you call them inconsistent and hypocrites, and lie shamelessly about lying when caught in blatant lies. Facts and logic are powerless against people who simply deny their power, because they’re refusing to fight in your universe. They’re not hypocrites in their value system, but they’re *enemies* of our society and our democracy and our value systems. Assuming they care is our biggest mistake.
