permafrost bite@StevenBeschloss how about the fact that the person was a mentally ill person to begin with and even has a manifesto. what radicalized the person? what was the motive? why did the person do it? all we can do now is wait and see what was written in the person's manifesto. it may reveal more than what is needed for the whole thing. wagging your finger at republicans and begging for a hitler styled arms confiscation is what will actually result in "fascism" that you all claim to hate so much.
Wunderpup06@permafrostbite @StevenBeschloss Manifesto’s are meaningless. A person who wants to kill others and themselves isn’t in a rational state of mind. The fact that someone in such a state has easy access to weapons that can kill several people in seconds is the problem. Other countries have found a balance between common sense controls and what you want to call Hitler style fascism. Maybe they might be onto something?

That was his 1st statement on the matter. Meanwhile the Mayor of Nashville was out of town & immediately hopped a plane & was back in Nashville before Monday evening.
Matthew van Eerde@StevenBeschloss we had a ban on assault weapons from 1994 to 2004. While it did significantly reduce school shootings, it did not eliminate them - for example, Columbine happened in 1999.
As 3D printing gets better, bans get less effective. I think the best approach to reduce school shootings is to normalize and subsidize therapy.

Shawn@StevenBeschloss Ask your GOP friends and family is they agree that the 2A is vaguely worded and should be updated to say exactly what it means. If they say it’s perfect as is, ask what a well regulated militia is. They will eventually admit that they think they need the 2A only because they believe or like to believe they may need to overthrow the government someday.
➡ @StevenBeschloss The well-regulated militia was a white supremacist institution for genocide, it's not something to aim for or return to. The Republicans deputizing their most violent supporters to form a militia is the most likely consequence of that line of reasoning, in my perspective. Reducing the number of these weapons isn't a bad idea on its face, but I think it needs to be paired with a real plan to stop the influence of fascism and white supremacy.
