@gpuopen Q: When are you going to fix the random crash to black screen issues on #AMD #Radeon #7900XTX?

Cuz it's extremely frustrating for users like @fuchsiii when their #Linux-compatible #GPU is less reliable than the shitty #GMA500!

Espechally since we're talking about a €1k+ GPU and not some shitty Voltari Z11 / SiliconMotion SM750-based VGA card that is being sold for €10 with shipping on Aperzon!

@fuchsiii @gpuopen exactly that!
#AMD, #plzfix cuz people paid top €€€€ in expectation of your hardware working.
@kkarhan @fuchsiii @gpuopen
I know their answer. "Works on Windows!" 😒
@bastetfurry @fuchsiii @gpuopen that answer is insufficient since it's sold and marketed for #Linux.
@bastetfurry @fuchsiii @gpuopen I mean they should not copy the bad things from #nvidia.
@kkarhan @bastetfurry @fuchsiii @gpuopen I wonder what it'd take to build a GPU from scratch
I built my own graphics card

@fuchsiii @amelia @gpuopen @bastetfurry

Or you could get yourself some shitty Voltari Z11 GPU for like €9 with shipping...

That should actually allow you to put out more than 800x600p60...

@kkarhan @fuchsiii @gpuopen @bastetfurry a framebuffer is all well and good but how do we render 3D stuff without killing ourselves on power or the CPU

@amelia @gpuopen @bastetfurry @fuchsiii That's why I'll claim #AMD will have to #FixTheirShit!

At least prevent their GPU from randomly crashing out and going braindead from one sec to another like someone overdosing on Xanax.

Cuz that's totally inacceptable and worse than it being hard-throttled to lowest speeds.

@kkarhan @gpuopen
Ok, that's the memo i hadn't gotten here 😅

Frankly, sounds like a typical dead on arrival card to me, especially if @fuchsiii is the only one having that problem.
RMA it. And if the problem persists we can assume a driver bug.

For all the critics one can have on Windows, and i have oh so many, the graphic drivers got pretty robust and can handle a counted/faultish graphics card.
Linux can't that much and falls on its face. At least in my experience.

@bastetfurry @kkarhan @gpuopen https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2447 that does not look like its only me, but it looks like its only happening on arch linux. lets install fedora later...

@bastetfurry @kkarhan @gpuopen Or the LTS kernel 🤔
@bastetfurry @kkarhan @gpuopen Latest mesa-git + the LTS kernel seem to be stable, my issue was likley the kernel regression in the ticket above. So far everything seems to work fine. (havend stress testet yet, but no crashes so far)
@fuchsiii @bastetfurry @gpuopen also you seem.to be happier with KDE?

@bastetfurry @gpuopen @fuchsiii well AFAICT it's rather #AMD's shitty driver code and not some hardware defect.

We already verified that.

@kkarhan @bastetfurry @gpuopen at this point they are just mocking me………
@bastetfurry @kkarhan @fuchsiii @gpuopen “Patches gratefully accepted”?
/me hides behind cover
@fuchsiii @bastetfurry @kkarhan @gpuopen seriously, I’ve tried to start learning my way through amdgpu and this is the correct response.
@fuchsiii @bastetfurry @kkarhan @gpuopen still, the fact we’ve got BSD & Illumos support is wonderful. Somehow I don’t think AMD sponsored the work though.

@josephholsten @fuchsiii @bastetfurry @gpuopen IMHO they SHOULD.

At least in tue way #Valve does #TF2 by paying some freelancer to write stuff that gets accepted in mainline kernel and not get rejected by the maintainers for being shit quality and/or weird code.

@josephholsten @fuchsiii @bastetfurry @gpuopen I'd accept that if it was some old.abandonware by a defunct company (i.e. #Linux drivers for #3dfx cards) but not for a product that is beibg advertised to support #Linux and even if it wasn't costs 4 digits MSRP.

We ain't in 2007 anymore where everything but #Intel didn't work and #nvidia was like "here, take this binaryblob!" and #ATi was like "go fuck yourself!" when it comes to #GPU drivers.

@josephholsten @fuchsiii @bastetfurry @gpuopen having a #GPU randomly go #braindead until reset is not only inacceptable, but inexcuseable!

Shit like this doesn't happen with any other card amd I'm used to #jank like #ExpressCard-based USB 3.0 controllers!

@kkarhan @fuchsiii @bastetfurry @gpuopen Exactly. Seems deserving of an RMA.

@josephholsten @fuchsiii @bastetfurry @gpuopen no.

Deserves a "fix it or give me my money back and reimburse me for the cost of migrating to another manufacturer" kinda lawsuit.

But that's not legal advice, but me.being used to flex on suppliers if need be.

@fuchsiii @kkarhan @gpuopen
I had problems with the AMD iGPU inside my Steam Deck with vanilla Arch, random crashes and whatnot.
In the end simply compiling newest MESA and using that solved it.

Here is an still open issue and maybe your problem is similar:

@bastetfurry @gpuopen seems like a different issue.

Apparently the GPU just.randomly resets itself and goes temporarily braindead until rebooted.

And I kinda have to agree with @fuchsiii that this should not be an issue espechally since neither #Vega64 nor #RX5700 had this problem at launch.

@bastetfurry @gpuopen @fuchsiii

The only workaround I can think of would be to instal #OpenSSH server and then remotely restart the entire graphics stack, which is not a fix as it still means all #GUI applications got killed!

@bastetfurry @gpuopen @fuchsiii And yes pressing CTRL+ALT+F9 to switch to an unused terminal session doesn't work.

And the worst part is that this isse can destroy #AMD / #Radeon #GPUs since no powersaving or thermal managment of the VGA-BIOS is being loaded.

So the machine can eandomly wake up from S3 or S5 and sound like a fucking fighter jet and still be braindead.

@bastetfurry @kkarhan @gpuopen already running mesa 23.1.0 git, compiled 1 or 2 weeks ago :/

windows 11 btw works fine except for some rare graphics glitches, but no crashes

@fuchsiii @bastetfurry @gpuopen so it's up to #AMD to get their shit together and do proper drivers...
