I was looking through some old stuff recently and came across this: When I was 6 or 7, I wrote a fan letter to author and illustrator Arnold Lobel, and he sent me back this amazing drawing and handwritten letter. We had his Frog and Toad books, Fables, Mouse Soup, and my favorite at the time, Owl at Home.

My heart is so full rediscovering this! I wish I could tell him now that I grew up to be an illustrator myself. This is definitely getting framed.

I still have my childhood copy of Owl at Home! I think Tear-Water Tea was always my favorite story from this.
@sarahbecan My kids now ask to read Tear-Water Tea and I feel like some circle has been completed. Although, as an adult, what a strange story…
@zeigert that’s so lovely!! And yeah, Tear-Water Tea is kind of strangely wistful for a children’s story. Altho I always loved the list of things that made him sad. Pencils that are too short to use!!
@sarahbecan wow!!!! that's amazing, i loved those books as a kid!
@drewtoothpaste me too!! He was a Real One for sure.
@sarahbecan what an absolute treasure!
@jillithd right? I’m going to hang this over my drawing table! It makes me so happy to look at ^_^
@sarahbecan This is so lovely. Definitely frame that letter!
