I already looked at /e/, a degoogled Android ROM a while back, but now, it's time to try something closer to stock Android, with added privacy: @iode.

Not only does it give you a fully open source experience in terms of apps, but it also blocks all trackers and ads by default, in all apps, with a stock Android experience.

Let's take a look at how it compares!

Degoogled, Private Custom Android ROM: how does IODÉ OS compare?

YouTube
@thelinuxEXP @iode a couple of big flaws for me at least in the US is that deGoogled ROMs don't support my banking and usually strip support for hardware 2fa keys like NitroKey or Yubikey, does Iode have this support? I'm seriously considering switching to an iPhone at this point.
@Sh4d0w_H34rt @iode As showed on the video, my banking app worked, but I only tried mine!
@thelinuxEXP Nick I remember your review on another ROM a while back saying similar about your banking app back then too. That same ROM even with microG refused to install my banking app.

@Sh4d0w_H34rt @thelinuxEXP @iode GrapheneOS might be the way. Instead of microG it sandboxes Google Play Services so you get the same experience as on stock android but with more control so that Google can't track you like it usually does.

I recommend Louis Rossmann's video on it. TechLore might have something there as well.

@runarcn I ran GrapheneOS for a while and no even with the sandboxing my banking app refused to work, also trying to get help on issues were problematic with the developer getting into flame wars with rivals in my mentions on Twitter. You mentioned Techlore so have you seen this? Many of the claims made I happen to have experienced so I believe its accurate.

@Sh4d0w_H34rt @thelinuxEXP @iode why would you swap from a deGoogled device to a device with even higher walls and the same lack of privacy? 🤔
@justinz never underestimate the need for things to just work. As the majority of my apps are open source and privacy focused and already have a NAS running cloud replacements issues with the OS are minimized. But the shattered state of deGoogling leads to way too many compromises in user experience. I'm keeping a close eye on Linux phones though they aren't quite ready yet.
@Sh4d0w_H34rt @thelinuxEXP 🙂 if you have a spare Android phone, you can download the OS for free and give it a try

@thelinuxEXP @iode

Brave of you to confess to the LTT hack 😂

@HarmonicDesign @iode Hahah I hope they don’t take that too seriously 😂
@thelinuxEXP @iode Super intéressant d’avoir la présentation du projet et la comparaison avec /e/OS. Perso j’avais jamais vraiment compris quel était le positionnement de iodé. C’est plus clair maintenant.
@thelinuxEXP @iode I'm planning to get an S10 as a secondary phone at some point so this came up at the right time, this ROM looks pretty good so far
@vegetotownley @thelinuxEXP let us know if you have any questions 🙂 🙏
@iode @thelinuxEXP of course, of course, thank you guys for your amazing work!
@thelinuxEXP @iode finally, I can replace the f**king google with this os

@thelinuxEXP @iode thanks for your review, Nick. Any chance to get a @GrapheneOS review one day? O maybe even a comparison between Graphene, Iodè and @efoundation. Thanks

@thelinuxEXP @iode what device are you using? Have you tried putting postmarketOS or another Linux OS on there?
@thelinuxEXP @iode Already seen a couple comments asking for GrapheneOS but I feel like itd be a boring video because Graphene is more about design philosophy and low level improvements like hardened_malloc and the improved sandbox, storage scopes, etc
@calciume @iode Plus, I’m not buying a Pixel for a ROM review, it wouldn’t make financial sense!
@thelinuxEXP @iode Yeah, maybe someday though? I love it for its minimalist design philosophy and that theres zero compromises to using it, all banking apps and stuff like that work too
@calciume @thelinuxEXP we're glad you're into that. You can download it for free, if you want to give it a try someday📱 🙂
@iode @thelinuxEXP Give em a GrapheneOS review unit ;) For the fans!
@thelinuxEXP
The Pixel I'm writing to you on now (granted it's a 3a) cost me $60 US. They're cheap on Swappa right now, and run most custom Roms.
@calciume

@thelinuxEXP @iode Iodé looks really interesting. The team did a great job!

I like that you can buy phones in different price ranges and with iodéOS pre-installed from their shop. This makes it much easier to recommend to people who are not confident in flashing a ROM themselves.

I'm really happy with my GrapheneOS phone and likely won't switch anytime soon, but if I did, I think iodé would be next in line!

@Coopossum @thelinuxEXP Thank you for the kind words, we really appreciate it!🙏 🙂
@thelinuxEXP you should check out calyxOS Honestly this looks pretty identical to calyxOS, never had issues with microg there.
@thelinuxEXP @iode The problem with all those OS is that because of the architecture of smartphones, it's only available to specific devices of specific regions.
@thelinuxEXP @iode it would be nice if you did a review like this of the brax2 phone. It's an open source degoogled Android device with a focus on privacy.
@thelinuxEXP thank you for taking the time to review us, Nick🙏 🙂
@thelinuxEXP @iode Good video!

Was just wondering what are the differences between /e/ and iodé.

29 is a lot of phones in my opinion, for a non corporate sized team anyways.

I've been pretty happy with /e/, but the mitm blocking sounds cool as hell.
