As IT at large we still haven't "solved" the question: what about all these profiles of people who have since died.

Say what you want about LinkedIn, at least they addressed this[1].

I am sure there are plenty of systems out there that will simply garbage-collect accounts that haven't logged in > n days. Or that don't provide any option whatsoever for direct relatives (and others) to deal with the situation and account.

@asmodai That does seem much improved on the process they had about five years ago, when they closed my account and would not tell me why for months until they eventually advised me that, and I quote, “someone told us you were dead”.

@ceri Oh geez, that's a bizarre situation. And yeah, glad they instituted a policy of having to show proof. When I was reading that my initial thought was that it would be easy to just claim someone is dead. And then I saw the points of what they expect you to show them as part of the proof.

I am not sure if every country/culture on earth uses death certificates and/or obituaries though.
