A new sea ice concentration satellite data product, released as part of the ESA Climate Change Initiative, harvests early prototype satellite sensor data to provide new insight into the development of global sea ice during the 1970s.

I am impressed by what the team managed to do for this first version. They had to deal with old tape transcripts, limited QC and questionnable calibration.

They are already working on their v2, with many improvements.

@lavergnetho Thanks for the info. The 1970s featured some extremes of sea ice in the Bering and Chukchi Seas so I’m quite keen for these results.
