Deep down, I know this to be true. #twitter is dying, and even if it survives, it'll never be the same. I think we're at the point where we all realize that the bar closed an hour ago and we're just drinking in the parking lot as we try to keep the night alive, as folks peel away one after another. #socialmedia #birdapp #birdappexodus

How a social network falls apart

LiveJournal and Tumblr fell apart under new ownership that didn’t understand their communities. Elon Musk’s Twitter could face the same fate.

@sam_animeherald you nailed it. That’s the current vibe for sure. At the same time…I’ve realized I was ready for that party to end. It’s just time for something new.
@mmcd I'm mostly just there to watch the place burn down at this point. I've long given up on doing anything useful for Elon.

@sam_animeherald As much as I disagree with his changes (and many of his personal stances), I kinda think I was done regardless. It’s weird, but there’s behavior I totally accepted over there and when I see it on Mastodon it looks so weird and out place.

The biggest has to be “RT if you agree with X”

It was always low-effort content to pump engagement numbers, but since Mastodon doesn’t work the same way, it doesn’t really reward that. It’s just…refreshing, I guess.

@mmcd I honestly hate the low effort engagement bait, also, and the more I'm here the more acutely aware I become that it's not normal.
@sam_animeherald exactly! Idk how I became so desensitized to it.
@mmcd When you see something enough, you learn to just blank it out mentally.

Well said.
@darren Indeed. Just like Tumblr, Myspace, and countless forums before it, we can only kind of watch sadly at the shambling corpse until it finally staggers off to the hereafter. It's dead, we're in a better place now.
