A quick look at my in progress new #studio setup. Before anyone rushes to tell me, I know the monitor placement isn't ideal. It would be better to move then to the edges of the table, but in front... But I don't have the space, and moving the #modular is another level of fuckery (cable lengths and routing). If I hate it this way I'll buckle down and do it more properly, but the monitors are going to have to remain close to the wall, I need some of the table space in front of them.

My setup isn’t ideal either. I use headphones for all of my work, normal ones for recording & initial mixing. Then Slate VSX for fine tuning by emulating different 1st class studios. I’ll then use the speakers as a final listen just to ensure there’s nothing really out of place.
Because I use headphones for pretty much all my listening now, I can use that experience to mild what I’m hearing when I record & mix.

@GuitarSith I do a lot of my day to day sound design, sampling, recording, songwriting and most of the basic mixing on phones. Monitors get used more toward the end, and intermittently to verify the phones aren't misleading me.

Exactly. If I could build a space to work in I’d be much more careful about placement and acoustics. As it is I’m stuck in a room and didn’t have a lot of freedom in placement.

@GuitarSith same. The room I am in is weird, basically a wide hallway (it also has a closet that's basically a small second room attached). It's like 10 ft by 22 ft or something dumb like that. For years I shared it with my wife but she moved out a month or so ago, hence the redesign. But, as mentioned. we are moving so it's more of a shuffle because I don't want to do the work needed to get it right only to have to break it down and move it across country.

My room is 14’ x 14’, the master bedroom. It has an ensuite behind where I took the photo & a 5’ x 10’ walk in closet to the left. I use the closet as guitar & equipment storage. My biggest issue at the moment is the patch bays, they need to be at the desk height, so I’m thinking about building my own custom rack. My other issue is all the cables, I loose space because I need access to them - just in case.

@GuitarSith damn that's an intense patchbay setup. Mine is only 2 of those 1u 48 point units. The only Behringer gear I own lol (bought one before I knew they were awful and one used). And I'm only using about half the second one.

The Allen & Heath ZED 436 mixer has 32 inputs, 32 direct outs & 32 inserts. Then of course the auxiliary, group & matrix outputs. I’m using a Presonus Quantum 4848 to map the mixer ins & outs. And an Apogee Quantum to map the group outs. Then with outboard rack gear I’m using pretty much all the patch points on seven bays. The bays make it so much easier to deal with.

@GuitarSith oh yeah, makes sense for sure. I don't have that much outboard gear, no matrix mixer and my mixer had about a third the inputs yours does. Maybe someday though...

I could have gone with a smaller mixer, but the difference in price points between 16 and 32 ins/outs is small, so I figured why not. And you never know, maybe one day a band will show up wanting to record live. 🤔🙄😬
