There's a lot of contrived #Coincidence in #TV. For instance, in last night's #NCIS, Parker's father is staying w/ him, having been kicked out of his retirement home, and here comes a case his father can help with by questioning residents of another retirement home.

Contrived coincidence in #Movies, too.

#StarTrekVI: The Enterprise is under attack by a cloaked Klingon ship..."What about that equipment we have to catalog gaseous anomalies? The thing's gotta have a tailpipe."

"Doctor, would you care to assist me in performing surgery on a torpedo?"

"Fascinating."

I'm not saying #Coincidence is necessarily bad in #Fiction, #TV, and #Movies. #Stories need #Structure and we often accept when #Characters' work resonates w/ issues in their personal lives, expectations being set and then met. If a gun appears in the first act, it should be fired by the third act. #ChekhovsGun
Related to #Coincidence, #Stories' quality of #Resonance, #Roundness distinguishes them from #Reality. As the saying goes, #Fiction has to make sense; reality doesn't. Yet we instinctively want to make sense of reality. If it presents no #Patterns or #Narratives, we make them. We should be wary of those we make, that nicely fit our #Opinions or general outlook.
