I sometimes wondered why buses on my route often don’t have their live tracking showing on the Transit app. Yesterday I learned that they drop off the tracking if they are 10 minutes late! That’s pretty annoying on a long route where the bus only runs hourly and often gets a bit behind- I still want to know where it is! Thought I’d alert other #Ōtepoti people who don’t know. #BusTracking
Here’s a screenshot of the message about it - check the alerts on the app. You can look at the ORC website for cancellations etc but I don’t imagine that updates in real time about our bus running 11 minutes late 🤷🏻‍♀️
Also interesting to note that one reason behind the current bus delays is “more cars on the road”. #TooManyCars 😡
I’m going to write to the ORC about this one - will update you on any response.

@simplicitarian if it’s more than 10 minutes away it would still be great to know it’s coming!

They must be doing loads of roadworks. I know the buses are skipping the Sawyers Bay stop altogether for the next couple of months.

@heyrochelle Road works AND more cars are behind the delays they say 🤷🏻‍♀️
@simplicitarian more cars? So maybe if they had better public transport, there would be fewer cars & the buses would run to time. That’s circular, but it’s what I choose to believe 😂😂😂
@heyrochelle Yes, there’s certainly some sort of downward spiral happening there 🤦🏻‍♀️
@simplicitarian This seems....
unhelpful...
@simplicitarian
Oh, really? Well that's useful.
Do you know if they do the same thing when excessively early
Also on a route which is mostly hourly. And mostly use private transport as a result
@RedRobyn It says it’s only for delays. It is not supposed to run early and that’s grounds for a complaint- so annoying eh.
@simplicitarian
In my experience they can go by quite "early".
Note that they have very few time checks along most routes, so when I've complained in the past unless it left the time point at the start of my run ahead of time it's not early

@simplicitarian
8 buses cancelled on our route today, including all 3 between 6.30 pm and 10.30 pm.

This experience is going to severely impact my kiddo's willingness to bus over from their flat to water my plants while I am away

@RedRobyn All 3 is really hopeless 😡 I emailed ORC tonight about the dropping off Transit app thing. Will be interesting to see the response 🤔
@simplicitarian That's really annoying. That's what happened last week when my sister thought the bus had been cancelled, when in reality it was just running so late she couldn't see it on the app.
@craftygardennz So bad 😬 The bus tracking was so often not working on my route that I didn’t trust it anymore.
@simplicitarian Also - they drop off the tracker if they have to take a slightly different route for a block or two due to roadworks closures… says the parent of an anxious teen that contacts me excessively when they’re panicking that they missed the bus after school. I’ve watched them pop on and off the tracker.
@simplicitarian - thankfully she can take any one of about 4 routes that get her close enough to where she’s going for her after school activity to walk the rest of the way. Getting home on other days is another story however!?! But there would be a riot if that one got cancelled (main route to Mosgiel).
@bpc_designs Ugh, that’s very annoying 😬
@simplicitarian I was pretty gobsmacked when I read this, too!
@andreajnz I knew they often didn’t show up on the app, but it still really surprised me!

@simplicitarian I reckon much of the lack of effective public transport services in New Zealand is that they don't have a strong focus on the end-user. If organisations were focussed on the end-user, the public, they would know why dropping off the app after being 10 minutes late is absurd. Communication is everything!

My view is the people running pubic transport in Aotearoa don't use it or rely on it themselves, and therefore have no real idea of what it is like.
