First blog post in a while, this time a little bit of a personal one. It's about why, a few years ago, conferences suddenly became very difficult experiences for me, how I've learned to better cope since then, and what others can do to help.

Visual Snow: Why I Can't Stand White PowerPoint Backgrouds | Dr S J Thomson

Why a rare neurological condition makes conferences a difficult experience.

@physicssteve I think this is an important point, thanks for sharing!

Out of curiosity, did you ever experiment with a solarised colour palette? It seems to be very popular for screens, but I don't know if it's actually effective for, say, a PowerPoint presentation.

@physicssteve let me rephrase my question: what specific colours work well in your opinion?
@wild For me personally, I like dark blue/grey/green backgrounds with white text. I find the darker backgrounds easier to look at, and blue (for example) is less harsh than plain black, so it seems to work well. I try to avoid red (because I often use green, and red-green colour-blindness is common) and yellow (because it displays badly on most projectors).
@wild I've tried it on screens, but never for a PowerPoint presentation. I suspect that this could work well on a decent projector, but might look quite bad on low-quality projectors. 😬
