A big welcome to all our new followers from recent days.

Once a week we do a thread about geo stuff, this week we turn our attention to one of the most geographically strange countries of them all: France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท

Join us for this week's #geoweirdness thread

1/n

2/ Where to begin?

First up, what most people think of as ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท France is actually only "Metropolitan France"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_France

But France is much bigger and includes many other territories.

3/ As we covered in our #geoweirdness thread from a few weeks ago, ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ทFrance's longest border is, perhaps surprisingly, with ... ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท Brazil along the border of the French Dรฉpartement de la Guyane (French Guiana ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ซ)

4/ France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท also includes the islands Saint Pierre and Miquelon ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฒ (ISO code "PM") just off the coast of Canada ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

#geoweirdness

5/ France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท has numerous Caribbean islands, including Saint Martin where it shares a land border with the Kingdom of the Netherlands ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ territory Sint Maarten ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฝ

#geoweirdness

6/ France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท once had a territorial dispute with ... Mexico ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ regarding ownership of tiny Clipperton Island in the Pacific.

Arbitration determined it to belong to France

Here's our recent Mexican #geoweirdness thread

7/ As we mentioned in last week's thread - France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท and Italy ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น have an open border dispute about the exact course of their border on Mont Blanc ๐Ÿ”๏ธ in the Alps

#geoweirdness

8/ France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท also borders the micro state of Monaco ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡จ on the Mediterranean coast.

Monaco is a fully independent country, but uses the French postal system.

#geoweirdness

9/ Another tiny nation bordering France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท is land-locked Andorra ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฉ.

One bizarre remnant of medieval tradition is that the ruler of France -previously the king, now the president (currently Emmanuel Macron) - also holds the position of "Co-Prince of Andorra", along with the Bishop of Urgell.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Co-Princes_of_Andorra

#geoweirdness

10/ Not far from Andorra ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฉ is the village of Llรญvia. It is a tiny bit of Spanish ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ territory entirely surrounded by France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ll%C3%ADvia

#geoweirdness

Llรญvia - Wikipedia

11/ Spain ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ and France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท have a delightful border dispute over the tiny Pheasant Island island in the middle of the Bidasoa river. The solution: the island changes ownership every 6 months.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pheasant_Island

12/ Many countries have dependent territories, and so does France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท, but it even has the "overseas country" (Pays d'outre-mer in French) of French Polynesia ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ซ

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overseas_country_of_France

#geoweirdness

13/ Further west from there we have New Caledonia ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡จ and France's territories in the Indian Ocean: Rรฉunion ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ช and Mayotte ๐Ÿ‡พ๐Ÿ‡น. All part of France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท.

Indeed the world's longest regularly scheduled non-stop domestic flight is Paris to Rรฉunion, over 9,000km

#geoweirdness

14/ of course we haven't yet mentioned France's ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท tiny Indian Ocean islands or Antarctic claims, all bundled into something known as the French Southern and Antarctic Lands ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ซ (ISO code: TF)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Southern_and_Antarctic_Lands

French Southern and Antarctic Lands - Wikipedia

15/ Speaking of ISO codes, another geographic oddity is that France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท is one of the few countries with multiple levels of ISO 3166-2 (country subdivision) codes, as you can see here in a response from our geocoding API

#geoweirdness

16/ So as you see, France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท is one of the geographically strangest countries in the world.

And the situation is dynamic as we saw in this incident on the border with Belgium ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช last year:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/may/04/farmer-moves-border-stone-for-tractor-and-makes-belgium-bigger

We have many more threads about specific countries, border disputes, geocoding, etc listed on our blog. Most still on twitter, but over time we are moving them here to mastodon. Enjoy.

We'll feature more countries in coming weeks and months

18/ one final bonus France ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท #geoweirdness toot, because why not?

As found on reddit (of course), and presented without comment.

@opencage many of these have popped up on the lovely Tim Traveller's YouTube page.

@opencage Thank you for bringing these #geoweirdness threads to Mastodon. They are both fun and educational! Thanks!
@opencage Excellent! quite a few new weird things I did not know there. Some of these go some way to explain why France is so important in the current discussions to protect oceans as it has โ€“ weirdly โ€“ the largest maritime domain in the world. something I found out quite recently and still think baffling.

@opencage Wow, that is an interesting thread!

I knew many of these facts separately, but never really thought about how many weird things France has!

@nicemicro @opencage France has 68 millions weird things.
@KekunPlazas As someone who's only been to France twice I'd still be surprised if there would be only one weird thing per person. ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท
@opencage Who can explain me that La Rรฉunion, while "proper" France (A DOM), has its own internet TLD .re?

@IIVQ many regions have their own TLDs (.cat for Catalonia for example), nothing unique about Rรฉunion.

Historically many dependent territories also have their own ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes. Some background: https://opencagedata.com/guides/how-to-determine-the-iso-codes-for-a-location

How to convert coordinates or addresses to ISO 3166 codes

How to guide to turn GPS coordinates (longitude/latitude) or addresses into ISO 3166-1 and ISO 3166-2 codes

@opencage Thx for the clarification! I also see that my sovereign state has 4 countries and thus 5 TLD's ๐Ÿ˜…: .bq for the non-independent Carribbean Netherlands
@opencage France also has a border conflict with Surinam: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borders_of_Suriname
And apparently also one with Sint Maarten (A country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands): http://mobile.outremers360.com/page/article/12111/saint-martin-la-frontiere-a-oyster-pond-nouvelle-source-de-conflits-entre-la-partie-hollandaise-et-francaise.html The latter concerns only a few houses of land, but has huge consequences for the sea border and thus drug trafficing.

@opencage Iโ€™m not surprised that the dispute was reignited by Brothers of Italy, they would defend the border with guns if they could ๐Ÿ˜ก and now theyโ€™re governing this country! What a blessing ๐Ÿ˜ญ

@opencage @bornach
Saint Martin is not "Dutch", it is it's own country, constituent to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
@IIVQ @bornach yes, we know (we have a whole thread on the kingdom of the Netherlands as well). Just using the colloquial term

@opencage
I believe France is one of only 2, 4 or 5* countries which are in all four hemispheres

* 2, 4 or 5 depending on the definition: https://rants.au/@sabik/109646013501316101

sabik (@[email protected])

@[email protected] In summary, countries which are in all four hemispheres: โ€ข Kiribati, France โ€” integral, permanently settled parts of the country are in each of the four hemispheres โ€ข US, UK โ€” permanently settled parts of the country are in each of the four hemispheres, but some of them are not fully integral (US unincorporated territories, UK overseas territories) โ€ข Norway โ€” parts of the country are in each of the four hemispheres, but one of them is neither permanently settled nor fully integral (dependent territory) and another is integral but not permanently settled

@sabik On the final Friday of the month we play a geo trivia game, we had a similar question about number of continents. See:

Geotrivia - February 2021: multi-continent countries

Blog > Monthly Geo Trivia questions Hi everyone,

@opencage Contrary to many other European countries, many (not all) of France's "colonies" are proper France and thus part of the European Union. Thus, the most Western (Saint-Martin), Southern and Eastern (Both Rรฉunion) points of the EU are "in" France.
Rรฉunion, together with Mayotte, are the only parts of the EU south of the equator.
#GeographicalExtremity
(The Northernmost is Finland)

(And yes, I have visited the southern- and easternmost points รกnd done the longest domestic flight!)

@opencage

Iโ€™ve enjoyed reading this. A big part was unknown to me. Thanks for seeing this up!
@opencage Very interesting thread. As a French, I even learned a couple things about my own country.
