The best thing I've seen written on Musk and Twitter is this random YouTube comment (that I can't find a way to link to directly)
@stephenjudkins Right-click on the date on the comment (x days ago). It will show up as highlighted comment when someone accesses it.
@Z4X15 I'm on a phone currently, fwiw
@stephenjudkins I realized it only after replying. You will have to do it later and save it or if you share the youtube video, I can try to find it for you.
@stephenjudkins what video was this posted on?
@stephenjudkins
There's this graffito in my hometown which translates to
"how many likes will make you happy?" It got two replies: "none" and "all, you hippies!"
@SheDrivesMobility
Edit: that graffito is history, the wall has been painted over.
@stephenjudkins @rene “In a way the app created its owner” 👍🏻
@stephenjudkins if I had money I’d be exploring Yellow Nile, Chad’s Aorounga Crater or Great Basin NP. Social Media is what I do instead.

@stephenjudkins a pseudonymus YouTube user as the McLuhan of our time. Not the hero we deserved, but...

We shape our tools and then our tools shape us, Twitter edition. Musk as the whale entrapped by a toxicity-machine feeding his insatiable void of an ego hungry for approval.

The Lord said: It is the men of sinful actions actuated by their previous misdeeds who become ghosts after death. Please listen to me, I shall tell you in detail.

Hungry Ghosts: their History and Origin

Hungry ghosts are the demon-like creatures described in Eastern lore as the remnants of the dead who are afflicted with insatiable desire, hunger or thirst as a result of bad deeds carried out in their life times

@stephenjudkins Elon Musk as the continuation of Mick Jagger? Interesting. And completely on spot.
@stephenjudkins Hungry ghosts are described in Tibetan #Buddhism as having a stomach the size of a mountain and a throat as thin as a needle.
@stephenjudkins “Money is numbers and numbers never end. If it takes money to be happy, your search for happiness will never end.”
~ Bob Marley
@stephenjudkins "a system without agency ends up in control" brother, may I please introduce you to the concept of capitalism
@stephenjudkins the system DOES have agency. That is the ironic point of the final sentence!
@stephenjudkins musk represents the inability to adapt to changing circumstances. Not at all a good business model. Shareholders beware the monster is about to eat your cookie
@stephenjudkins The first aspect is one that I keep thinking of: Elon Musk doesn't seem happy. I feel very sad for someone who has practically infinite money and yet makes themselves so unhappy.

@stephenjudkins

So... Elon Musk is No-Face from Spirited Away, and Twitter is Yubaba's bath house?

Fits.

@stephenjudkins Great find! I love people who can cut through the haze and explain the root of a problem succinctly.

Transcription: what strikes me the most is the absolute inability for Musk to experience satisfaction, to be satiated. He’s a hungry ghost. He was up in the middle of the night haunted by the absolute deprivation of only 9 million impressions on his worthless superbowl tweet. He’s so taken in by the Skinner box of twitter that he bought it and is making the box-maintainers specifically give him higher numbers.

@stephenjudkins

But the whole point is that no matter what number the machine gives him he will feel dissatisfied with it because that feeling is precisely what makes the machine work.

This is the endgame of whale-baiting, right? You make software that’s hostile to brains in the hopes a few rich people get poisoned by it and become willing to exchange money for higher numbers.

@stephenjudkins

In twitter’s case, they got eaten by the whale. They get slack notifications at 2am if the whale isn’t getting enough numbers. In a way, the app created its owner. That’s a little fucked up to me, more so than the standard AI domination tropes, that a system without agency ends up in control.

@stephenjudkins @annaleen holy cow that’s amazing. The app created its owner. I need to sit with that
@stephenjudkins
Thank you. I'd rather read a screenshot than link to youtube directly.
@stephenjudkins holy crap, that is a really good comment. I’ll bet the poster is a little taken aback by the attention it’s getting; hell, I’ve had my hair blown back by 300 likes.

The Fox "News" documents show a network that inhabits a funhouse non-reality that it created and cannot escape. They've warped people's minds so much that they must play along with blatant lies because otherwise they'll lose viewers who are delusional *because* of their own programs. What a dystopian mess.

Mastodon
@stephenjudkins And this is the point that as an actor-network scholar, I show up and say the system always had agency, and Musk's world view makes him beholden to it.

Great quote.
Very neg UX trying to reply.

@stephenjudkins This clairvoyant observation about Twitter can be generalized ... to other media, social and classical, to jobs, companies, the economy, politics.
@stephenjudkins It's an interesting contrast with Jack Dorsey who by all accounts spent a huge amount of time attempting to defend his mental health from twitter.
@stephenjudkins What is the video that this comment is on?
@dragonarchitect @stephenjudkins Not OP but I recognise the comment - it's on a video on Big Joel's secondary channel. This should link to it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvGktIVwlnI&lc=Ugz0cj_O-a2I5AhK93N4AaABAg

Twitter is just Elon Musk's terrible blog now

@stephenjudkins god it’s too early for me to be thinking about this cyberpunk-ass nightmare situation
@stephenjudkins that is startlingly insightful for a YouTube comment

@stephenjudkins Nailed it. Since Musk's acquisition of Twitter, there have been more than a few articles which touch on the void that is Elon Musk's "soul". He will never be satisfied because the hole has always been there, and always will.

I speak with the absolute term of "always" because I don't think Elon will ever do the soul searching and emotional/mental footwork required to solve the issue.

@stephenjudkins So you are saying Elon purchasing Twitter makes Elon the new Fail Whale? #failehale
@stephenjudkins it's been said for a while that entire thing is basically a game. When you realise that, it's easier to disconnect from it.
@stephenjudkins You could at least have bothered with alt-text...
@stephenjudkins This is a really good way of saying it. Musk as the ‘whale’ that bought Twitter because he wasn’t happy with his progress there.
